Sources: Deron Williams prefers 2
When NBA free agency begins at midnight July 1, Brooklyn Nets star guard Deron Williams will be choosing from a two-team list that only features the Nets and the Dallas Mavericks, according to sources close to the situation.
Sources told ESPN.com on Saturday night that, while this summer's No. 1 free agent remains "up in the air" about which team he'll ultimately chose, Williams already has made the decision to narrow his list of potential destinations to those two franchises.

Warriors Interested In Signing Brandon Roy
Jun 22, 2012 11:52 PM EDT

The Warriors are interested in signing Brandon Roy, who is interested in making a comeback during the 12-13 season.

Bob Myers, Golden State's general manager, represented Roy when he was a player agent.

“It’s a possibility,” Myers said about Roy. “He’s an easy phone call to make.”

Roy is capable of playing both guard positions.

“I told (Roy) when he was amnesty-ed … ‘I hope this isn’t it for you. Make sure this isn’t it. He’s said publicly he wants to come back, so I’ll start to talk to him. It depends how everything goes for us and what his expectations are and all of that. But absolutely I’ll talk to him.”

Rockets set sights on moving up in draft

UPDATE (12:48 a.m. ET): Upon hearing of Sunday night's developments, one rival general manager told ESPN.com that he believes Houston's real aim is acquiring two top-10 picks this week to turn around quickly and offer both to the Orlando Magic as part of a considerable trade offer for Dwight Howard.

The Rockets' willingness to trade for Howard -- even without the All-Star center's signature on a contract extension -- is an open secret around the league. But it's believed that two top-eight picks, assuming Houston managed to complete trades with both Sacramento and Toronto, would seriously pique the interest of new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan, who could then quickly start following the same sort of roster-building blueprint relied on by his previous employers in Oklahoma City.

Acquiring those early lottery picks, though, only represents half of Houston's challenge if Howard is indeed the Rockets' target. The other hurdle is convincing Hennigan, who hasn't even been on the job for a week in Central Florida, to part with Howard so quickly. As much as he's been schooled in building through the draft while working alongside Thunder GM Sam Presti, Hennigan could opt to take a more measured approach, make one more run at trying to convince Howard to sign an extension before entering the final year of his contract and then trade him later in the summer if those efforts go nowhere.

Hornets have no interest in re-signing Chris Kaman
Hornets could re-sign Belinelli and Landry

The Hornets also could make a push to re-sign power forward Carl Landry, center Chris Kaman or shooting guard Marco Belinelli. But it appears Kaman is not likely to be pursued by the Hornets, according to sources. “We could probably use a couple more veteran guys who understand the day in and day out of dealing with me and the kind of practices we execute every day,” Williams said. “It takes a certain kind of leadership, and along with talent, I think you have to add guys who understand what it takes to be a pro. If we can add some sound vets that understand what we’re trying to do, that would be good as well.”

BIRD LEAVING PACERS … WALSH RETURNING

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – The Indiana Pacers’ continued return to prominence will go on without the man who served as the architect of the project.

Hall of Famer and reigning NBA Executive of the Year Larry Bird is leaving the organization, per Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star, a move that opens the door for Bird’s predecessor and former boss, Donnie Walsh, to return to Indianapolis as the franchise’s new boss.

Unspecified health issues are reportedly among the reasons Bird is “100 percent sure” he will not stay on president of the team after meeting with Pacers owner Herb Simon today:
Bird, who is dealing with some health issues, will likely take a year off before deciding if he wants to return to any sort of front-office position.
His departure comes just three days after The Star reported that Bird’s predecessor, former CEO Donnie Walsh, is expected to return to the franchise in some capacity. There’s a possibility Walsh will take Bird’s title of president.
Simon always has respected Walsh, who spent 24 years with the Pacers before leaving to become president of basketball operations with the New York Knicks in 2008.

Walsh, who took last year off, attended several of the Pacers’ pre-draft workouts at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Kevin Pritchard, the team’s current director of player personnel, will likely work with Walsh as the team’s new general manager. Bird pushed for Pritchard to become general manager, citing Pritchard’s basketball knowledge.

David Morway, who had been the Pacers’ general manager, is no longer employed by the franchise, according to a source.

Bird’s departure isn’t a stunner, only because there has been speculation that he would walk away at the end of each of his season’s at the helm. The more surprising news is that Walsh is set to return to his old position within the organization where he was beloved by all involved.

Simon remains a staunch Walsh supporter and there wasn’t an employee, player, coach or anyone else, that I’ve ever come across who didn’t heap anything other than glowing praise on Walsh. He spent 24 years with the Pacers, presiding over one of the league’s most consistent playoff programs during the bulk of his tenure.

Bird’s work to help rehabilitate the franchise in the wake of the Malice at the Palace in 2004 came full circle the past two seasons with the team he built making consecutive playoff appearances, including a tense Eastern Conference semifinal series (they actually led 2-1) against the eventual champion Miami Heat.

Bird leaves the Pacers in a prime position to contend for a top-tier perch in the Eastern Conference power structure, somewhere behind the Heat and their Central Division rival Chicago Bulls.

Bobcats considering trading No. 2 pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- New Charlotte coach Mike Dunlap says the idea of trading down from the No. 2 spot in the NBA draft to acquire extra picks "makes a lot of sense" for a young team like the Bobcats.
After finishing 7-59 and with the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history, the Bobcats have a variety of holes to fill this offseason.

Blazers extend qualifying offer to forward Batum

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Portland Trail Blazers have formally extended a qualifying offer to forward Nicolas Batum.

Batum is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1. The qualifying offer, which was expected, allows the Blazers to match any contract offer the French forward may receive from another team.
Batum has averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds over four seasons with the Blazers.

Nets Not Interested In Trading For Pau Gasol
Jun 24, 2012 11:31 AM EDT

The Nets have no interest in sending Deron Williams to the Lakers in exchange for a package headlined by Pau Gasol.

The Lakers have continued to express interest in a sign-and-trade, but the Nets will only consider such a move if they are getting back Andrew Bynum, whom the Lakers have not made available.
