Wayne Rooney is in advanced talks with Everton about rejoining his boyhood team with the potential move centring on the Merseyside club matching the £250,000-a-week basic salary he earns at Manchester United.

Rooney has a year left on his contract and is intent on having his wage matched.

Everton are aware the 31-year-old has previously stated they are the only Premier League side he would leave United for and they believe this strengthens their position.

Rooney’s only other option appears to be a move to Major League Soccer, where he could not earn as much, with interest from China fading.

United are due to fly to Los Angeles on Sunday to start their five-match, pre-season tour of America. If the transfer is not completed by then it remains in the balance whether Rooney will be in José Mourinho’s squad for the trip.

United could demand a transfer fee from Everton, yet because Rooney’s salary costs the club a minimum of £13m a year and this would be removed from the books, Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, may decide to waive any sum or agree a reduced amount.

If Rooney does depart it will close a 13-year spell at United that has been supremely successful. The striker signed from Everton in August 2004 and has since won five Premier Leagues, the Champions League, the FA Cup, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Fifa World Club Cup. He is also United’s record scorer with 253 goals.

Everton are stepping up their interest in re-signing striker Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.

BBC Sport understands there is increased momentum behind a deal to take Rooney back to Merseyside.

The future of the the 31-year-old, who started 15 Premier League games last season, has been the subject of speculation for several months.

The United captain's long-time adviser Paul Stretford held talks over a possible move to China in February.

Rooney began his career at Goodison Park before joining United for £27m in August 2004.

Everton's major shareholder Farhad Moshiri would regard Rooney's return to Goodison Park as a major coup.

Rooney has said repeatedly that he would not leave Old Trafford for any Premier League team other than Everton, although it is understood that they are not the only club interested.

Rooney, who has a contract with United until 2019, has seen his playing opportunities limited under Jose Mourinho's management.

Asked in May if he wanted to stay at Old Trafford, the former England captain said: "Of course. I've been at this club for 13 years, but I want to play football."

Everton's director of football Steve Walsh said in February that "it would be wrong" to ignore a potential deal for the forward, who is United's record goalscorer.

Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata, 24, has emerged as United's preferred striking option to replace the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic - with any deal likely to mean Rooney will be allowed to leave Old Trafford.

Mourinho's side are scheduled to report for pre-season training on Saturday before leaving for a five-match tour of the United States the following day.

Analysis

All parties are remaining tight-lipped on the details of negotiations.

Rooney's best days may be behind him but he still retains a global status - making him the perfect acquisition as Everton continue their fiercely ambitious strategy of demonstrating their determination to be major players once more.

He remains one of the most marketable players in England. Everton don't have anyone who comes close.

Wayne Rooney on threshold of return to Everton as talks continue with Manchester United

Everton are closing in on a deal to re-sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United. The 31-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to China but Everton have accelerated efforts to bring the England striker back to Goodison Park, 13 years after his £25.6 million switch to United, even though a deal is not yet over the line.

Bill Kenwright, the Everton chairman, met with Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, on Wednesday as talks gathered pace.

United’s players are due to report for pre-season on Saturday and it remains to be seen if Rooney flies with the rest of the squad to Los Angeles 24 hours later for the start of the club’s tour of the United States.

Farhad Moshiri, Everton’s majority shareholder, recognises the commercial value in signing Rooney and various options have been discussed in terms of financing the player’s basic £240,000 a week salary, which has previously been a stumbling block.

United could let Rooney – who has 12 months left on his existing deal with the option of another year – leave for free while there have been suggestions of a season-long loan with the two clubs splitting the cost of the wages.

Everton have already signalled their ambition by spending almost £100 million on five new signings this summer and also want £40 million-rated Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea but manager Ronald Koeman would face a challenge revitalising Rooney’s flagging career. Rooney was seen at a spin class in Liverpool on Wednesday as he seeks to build up his fitness ahead of pre-season.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to bolster his attack with United in talks with Real Madrid over Spain striker Alvaro Morata as a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has left the club after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in April.

There has also been dialogue with Everton over a deal involving Rooney and Romelu Lukaku but the Belgium striker has so far shown a preference to move to Chelsea, even though the Premier League champions have yet to make a formal offer.

If Rooney were to leave United before they managed to get another striker in, it would leave Mourinho with Marcus Rashford as his only recognised centre-forward. Anthony Martial can also operate in the position but was mainly used out wide by Mourinho last season.

Mourinho is understood to have been growing increasingly frustrated by United’s lack of progress in the transfer market this summer and Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, is under mounting pressure to deliver a signing before they leave for America. Sweden centre-half Victor Lindelof is the only arrival so far.

Morata and his representatives have been trying to push through a move to Old Trafford but Real have been playing hard ball over the fee, even though United hope to make a breakthrough this week.

United have already missed out on France striker Antoine Griezmann, who said this week he opted to stay at Atlético Madrid “mainly because of the transfer ban” the Spanish club had upheld. “It would be dirty to leave,” he said.
