Leicester tell Harry Maguire he can leave to join Manchester United but only for world record fee

Leicester City have promised Harry Maguire that he can leave the club if Manchester United or Manchester City pay a world record fee for the defender.

Maguire has informed manager Brendan Rodgers and Leicester’s squad of his desire to pursue a move to either of the Manchester clubs, in talks at the club’s training base in France.

The England international will not attempt to force through a move with a formal transfer request and has promised to remain professional if Leicester’s price tag is not met.

United are reluctant to pay a fee which will be higher than the £75million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January last year and it is understood the two clubs are still some way from agreeing a deal. Leicester want between £80m and £90m and have made that clear during negotiations.

Manchester City have also baulked at Leicester’s demands, and Maguire is now facing an anxious wait before the transfer deadline on August 8.

Leicester, however, have assured the 26 year old they will not stand in his way if either of the two clubs pay the fee required. Talks are understood to have been amicable and Leicester do not anticipate any mutiny from Maguire, who is a popular member of the dressing room.

Rodgers is also relaxed about the situation, and believes the club have enough central defenders in the squad to be well equipped if Maguire is indeed sold.

Caglar Soyuncu, a Turkey international signed for £19million from Freiburg last year, is highly rated inside the club while Filip Benkovic played for Rodgers on loan at Celtic last year. Reports of a move for Brighton’s Lewis Dunk or Burnley’s James Tarkowski are said to be premature.

Maguire, meanwhile, is set to miss Leicester’s friendly against Scunthorpe on Tuesday night, but only because he returned for pr­e-season last week after being given time off due to his participation in the Uefa Nations League.

Jonny Evans is also a doubt for the game at Glanford Park, while Ben Chilwell and Kasper Schmeichel will definitely be rested.

Been told #lcfc have no immediate plans to replace Harry Maguire if he leaves for #mcfc or #mufc. Club and Rodgers don’t see value in market for defenders right now eg #burnley Tarkowski, #bhafc Dunk, and want to give Soyuncu and Benkovic opportunities alongside Morgan and Evans.

Ed Woodward stays home from pre-season tour as Manchester United look to make more signings before window closes

Ed Woodward will not be joining Manchester United’s pre-season tour of Asia as the club bids to secure more signings before the close of the window in just over a fortnight.  

United face Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai on Thursday - two weeks before the Premier League transfer window finishes - in the fourth and final match of their trip to Australia and Asia.  

Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, will stay home with Matt Judge, the head of corporate development, as they bid to bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in addition to overseeing potential outgoings.  

So far United have encountered frustration in their efforts to sign Harry Maguire and Sean Longstaff from Leicester and Newcastle respectively, but are hoping for a breakthrough in negotiations.  

They have made two bids for Maguire so far, but as of yet have been unwilling to meet Leicester’s £90 million valuation of the England centre-half. Though they are not ready to walk away from a deal, it is thought they could pursue cheaper alternatives if talks over Maguire collapse.  

However, it is understood that there are no plans to trigger the £25m release clause in Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld’s contract before it expires on Thursday.

Manchester City have not yet ended their interest in Maguire, despite valuing him at closer to £60m. They also have some interest in Nathan Ake, the Bournemouth defender.  

United have been quoted £50m for Longstaff, a price that could seem excessive for a player who has made just nine Premier League appearances, and initially valued him at less than half that figure. Newcastle have been using the £50m that United paid for Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a benchmark, but United consider that unrealistic given that the England Under-21 right-back has played a lot more senior football than Longstaff.  

Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James remain Solskjaer’s only signings to date and there is also uncertainty over the futures of a number of United’s high-profile players, including Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.  

Lukaku - who has not played any part in United’s three tour matches to date with a reputed ankle injury - wants to join Inter Milan, but United rebuffed a £54m bid last week and are holding out for up to £90m for the Belgium striker. Inter need to sell Mauro Icardi to free up cash to sign Lukaku but have yet been able to offload the Argentina striker, who is interesting Juventus.  

Matteo Darmian is one of several players who are surplus to requirements at United and has been linked with Inter, Juventus and Valencia. United are demanding around £5m for the right-back.

Harry Maguire: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Manchester United to sign Leicester defender as soon as possible

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear to the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he wants to sign Harry Maguire as soon as possible, Sky Sports News understands.

Leicester will not let Maguire leave for less than £80m, which is £10m more than United have currently offered.

Woodward decided to not travel out for United's preseason tour of Australia and the Far East to work on the ongoing negotiations.

According to Sky sources, it is now up to Woodward to get the deal done.

England international Maguire is understood to be happy to remain at Leicester but would like to move to Old Trafford if a deal can be agreed by the two clubs.

Manchester City have also shown interest in Maguire and can offer him Champions League football, unlike United.

Solskjaer's need for a central defender may have increased on Thursday after Eric Bailly was injured during the 2-1 win against Spurs.

United have so far signed Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer and Solskjaer said on Wednesday he would be happy to start the season with no further signings.

Maguire's confidence in stepping out from defence caught Leicester's eye when the Yorkshireman was at Hull, and that attribute has stuck with the 26-year-old - his dribbling success rate is the second highest among any defender in the Premier League.

Maguire's aerial duel success rate is also the highest among any Premier League defender, a trait referenced in song by England fans during the Nations League.
