Newcastle fail to persuade Steve Clarke to become Chris Hughton's assistant managerNewcastle manager Chris Hughton has suffered a blow ahead of this weekend's Tyne-Wear derby after the club failed to persuade Steve Clarke to return to St James' Park as his No 2.
It is understood Newcastle have been unable to agree personal terms with the former Chelsea and West Ham assistant manager, who was a coach at the Tyneside club during Ruud Gullit's spell in charge.
Hughton has been seeking a right-hand man since Colin Calderwood quit the Premier League club to take over as manager at Hibernian a fortnight ago and Clarke has been out of work since leaving West Ham last summer following the dismissal of Gianfranco Zola.
Clarke, 47, who worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, had been realistic enough to know that the money on offer would not have matched the salaries he received at either Stamford Bridge or Upton Park but he was unwilling to re-locate for the package on offer. His decision means Hughton, who had reserve team assistant manager Steve Stone alongside him in the dugout when Newcastle were beaten 4-0 by Arsenal in the Carling Cup, will have to step up his search for an assistant as he attempts to guide the club to Premier League safety.
As he prepares for the visit of arch-rivals Sunderland on Sunday, Hughton's position has been strengthened with the announcement by his employers that they will sit down for talks over a fresh contract in the New Year.
With his current deal due to expire next summer, Hughton's position has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks and after a frenzy of betting raised fresh uncertainty, the club tried to quell further rumours by issuing a statement after the Arsenal game.
"Chris is our manager and will remain our manager and it is our intention to re-negotiate his contract at the end of the year," the statement said.
Hughton insisted he would like to remain at Newcastle "as long as possible" and played down the impact of the rumours.
"Nothing deters me from the job I am doing but are they helpful, of course they're not," Hughton said. "We will be very focused on what is a massive game for us on Sunday. "The players have a job to do. They will always do the best job they can. I have a focus of managing this club and to win as many games as I can and I have a remit of keeping this wonderful club in the Premier League."
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce emerged as an unlikely ally for Hughton. "I hope they give him the respect he deserves because he has done extremely well in difficult circumstances," said Bruce. "He's a proper football man and I hope they've looked after him in a way which is right, because of what he's done.
"He's created a spirit amongst the players, which is very, very good. He's got them promoted in a time when it was chaos.
"When I read and I'm told he is under pressure, or that his job is under threat, I find that absolutely ridiculous and that is the downside to what we do for living. I find it appalling that he has been criticised and questioned. For him to have to answer questions on it, I found that totally ridiculous."
Newcastle sources have insisted that Clarke was not offered the job but Telegraph Sport has it on good authority that he was at least sounded out about the vacancy.
都話左隊波而家冇乜錢,連請助教都唔可以 agree personal terms……
