Mavericks may have their eyes on Azubuike
The Mavericks are close to signing former Golden State Warrior Kelenna Azubuike, presuming he can pass a physical, a source close to the situation said. That may not be as simple as it sounds.
Azubuike underwent patella surgery in 2009 and never saw the court with New York after being traded there in the David Lee deal. It was found that the original surgery on his knee was not done correctly and he had another procedure.
Azubuike has not played in the league since early in the 2009-10 season. Because he has been out of action so long, Azubuike will likely begin his comeback with the Texas Legends in Frisco. He is expected to be in uniform Saturday night for the Legends and as soon as he sufficiently knocks off the rust, he would join the Mavericks.
At one time, he was considered one of the best athletic talents in the league when the 6-5 swingman was with the Warriors. He was part of the 2007 team that beat the Mavericks in the first round.
Born in London, England, he grew up in Tulsa and went to college at Kentucky, leaving as a junior.
In 2008-09, he averaged 14.4 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Warriors. The Mavericks clearly had their eyes on Azubuike when they waived Sean Williams on Thursday. That opened up a roster spot.
The Mavericks apparently had designs on former Denver Nugget Ronny Turiaf, who joined Miami instead. The Heat apparently had more playing time to offer than the Mavericks.
When healthy, Azubuike is a sharpshooting 3-point specialist. He hit 44.8 percent in 2008-09 and has made more than 40 percent from beyond the arc in his NBA career.
