Fabricio Coloccini has been named Newcastle United's captain for the 2011/12 campaign.
The Argentine international defender will take over the armband from Kevin Nolan, who left St. James' Park for Championship side West Ham last month.
Coloccini arrived at Newcastle in August 2008 and has racked up 115 appearances to date, scoring four goals.
Outstanding for the Magpies in their first season back in the Premier League last term, the 29-year-old was has a wealth of experience at the highest level having played for seven other clubs during his career including Boca Juniors, AC Milan and Villarreal as well as appearing in the 2006 World Cup.
He was stand-in captain for the home game against Wigan last October, and also led former side Deportivo La Coruna on a number of occasions.
"I am thrilled to be named captain of Newcastle United. It is one of the proudest moments of my career," said Coloccini.
"Leading the team out in front of our supporters in our first game against Arsenal will be a great honour for me and I aim to give my best for the team and the supporters throughout the season.
"I would also like to than Alan Pardew for putting his faith in me. It means so much to me."
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew explained his thinking behind the decision, adding: "I had no hesitation in choosing Fabricio to be my captain next season.
"He will lead the team in a different manner to Kevin but his professionalism, attitude, application and fantastic character made him the standout candidate and, in my mind, the 100 per cent right decision."
