SWP WANTS BOLTON MOVE - KNIGHT

Bolton defender Zat Knight claims Shaun Wright-Phillips is keen on a move to the Reebok Stadium.

Wright-Phillips started only two Barclays Premier League games for Manchester City last season and the midfielder came close to leaving the club in January.

A transfer to Wanderers would allow the 29-year-old England international to remain in the north west and Knight believes Wright-Phillips would be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen.

"I always talk to Shaun and he's a very good friend of mine. And speaking to him, he'd love to come to Bolton," said Knight, quoted in the Bolton News.

"He's at that age now where he needs to be playing first-team football week in, week out.

"I think he hasn't played regularly for the last two seasons. It's about playing football and then the rest will come.

"If he had to take a pay cut then I think he would do, because he could progress at Wanderers and then something else could happen.

"But he's a fantastic player and if people like that want to play here, then it shows how far the club has come."

Wickham set for medical

Sky Sports sources understand that Connor Wickham will undergo a medical at Sunderland on Wednesday after the Premier League club submitted a bid in excess of £8million to Ipswich.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are also thought to be interested in the 18-year-old striker, who has developed into one of most wanted teenagers in England.

But Sunderland are searching for long-term options, and replacements for the January sale of Darren Bent, and are consequently leading the way.

Skysports.com reported earlier on Tuesday that talks were ongoing with Ipswich regarding Wickham, but it is now understood that the deal has progressed.

An initial fee is less than £9m, but it is understood this could rise to as much as £13m.

Wickham has been a first-team squad member at Ipswich since the age of 16 and has also earned three caps for England's Under 21 side.

He was a member of Stuart Pearce's U21 squad during this summer's European Championship.

Di Matteo returns to Chelsea as No 2 to new Stamford Bridge boss Villas-Boas

Andre Villas-Boas will unveil his backroom team today with Roberto Di Matteo primed for an emotional return to Chelsea as assistant to the new manager.

Di Matteo spent six years as a hugely popular midfielder at Stamford Bridge, scoring in two FA Cup finals before he was forced to retire 10 years ago after breaking his leg.

The 41-year-old has been out of work since he was sacked as manager of West Bromwich Albion in January and missed out on a comeback when he was pipped to the Birmingham job by Chris Hughton earlier this month.

He started his coaching career at Milton Keynes Dons in 2008, forging a partnership with former Chelsea teammate Eddie Newton, before the pair moved to West Bromwich and won promotion to the Barclays Premier League in their first season.

Chelsea have cleared the decks in the coaching department and have vowed to provide Villas-Boas with all the support he requires to transplant his successful formula from Porto.

Fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha and scout Daniel Sousa are expected to join him from the Portuguese champions.

Birmingham midfielder looks bound for Black Cats

Sky Sports sources understand Birmingham midfielder Craig Gardner will hold talks with Sunderland on Wednesday.

Gardner has been tipped to be one of several players to leave St Andrews following Blues' relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season.

And Sky Sports revealed over the weekend that the Black Cats were leading the race for the 24-year-old former Aston Villa player.

Wearside boss Steve Bruce has money to spend in the transfer market this summer following the £20million sale of midfielder Jordan Henderson to Liverpool.

Gardner was one of the stand-out performers for Birmingham last season as they secured Carling Cup glory, but his 11 goals from midfield could not prevent his hometown club from sliding out of the Premier League.

A fee, believed to be in the region of £5million, has already been agreed between the two clubs, with discussions now due to take place between the player and his prospective new employers.
