West Ham United v Arsenal - Preview
If there is any justice in the footballing world then someone, somewhere will concede a hatful of goals to Arsenal soon.
Arsène Wenger’s side manufactured exactly 50 shots for themselves in the two games at Emirates Stadium this week but came away with only one goal to show for it.
Against Everton last Saturday and CSKA in midweek, Arsenal showed that, on one hand, they can carve through defences with artistry. But, on the other, they can sometime lack the final flourish.
Wenger takes his side to West Ham on Sunday. In their last Premiership trip, Arsenal had the crucial cushion of an early goal and went on to produce their most complete performance of the season.
The Hammers may have only just arrested an alarming run of eight straight defeats but the manager distance himself from suggestion that his side would mete out their own form of justice at Upton Park
"It would certainly be a bit pretentious to say someone will suffer the backlash this weekend,” he said at Friday’s pre-game press conference. “You want just to continue and play well like we did. Every game is different and in every one you have different problems.
"The feeling amongst the players after the two games was frustration. They felt they had a lot of quality and they have not got the complete reward for what they produced. And they are right. I cannot say they are wrong.
“On Sunday, we just want to keep the same level of quality in our game and, if we do that, then we have a good chance to beat West Ham.”
Wenger has drafted Emmanuel Adebayor into his squad following his recovery from a thigh problem. Emmanuel Eboue trained on Friday for the first time since picking up a knee injury and could make a return in Wednesday’s Carling Cup tie at Everton. Freddie Ljungberg (calf) is a week away from fitness and Brazilian midfielder Julio Baptista (hamstring) a fortnight.
West Ham’s signed their own South Americans on deadline day however Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano have started only five games between them. Their acquisition has had coincided with a horrible run of defeats. The media have speculated their presence has upset the balance of the side, Wenger disagrees with the theory. He had the duo watched himself but did not pursue the interest.
"I don’t think that the players can disrupt the group,” he said. “What could do it is maybe a possible takeover from the top. I don’t think the players would it. It is more linked to a more global situation.
"We watched them before they signed of course and they are both good players but I never went any further," he concluded. "I was never completely convinced that we needed a holding player [Mascherano] and a striker [Tevez] as well so I never made any inquiry.”

Adebayor in squad, Eboue back for Everton
Emmanuel Adebayor is in the Arsenal squad for the trip to West Ham on Sunday.
The striker has been out for 10 days since he injured his thigh at West Brom.
On Thursday, Arsène Wenger told Arsenal.com that the Togolese striker was "90 per cent" to play. At his pre-game press conference the next day he confirmed his involvement and suggested another African player is not far away from fitness.
“Adebayor is available but Eboue is a bit short,” said the manager. “He could be OK for Everton on Wednesday.
“He practiced with us for the first time today and we’ll see how his knee injury is on Saturday.”
