Real Madrid could be without Christoph Metzelder for the majority of the rest of the season as the defender could require surgery to overcome his latest injury.
The German international suffered a recurrence of a problem with the sole of his foot, the club has announced, and it may need an operation to solve it.
Metzelder joined Madrid from Borussia Dortmund last summer, but has made just one appearance since picking up the injury in December.
His absence could cause coach Bernd Schuster serious concern as Pepe and Gabriel Heinze both have knocks and Marcelo is struggling too.
When Madrid signed Metzelder they were aware of his previous problems as he had two operations on his Achilles on his right leg while in Germany, although this is the first time that he has had an injury on the sole of his foot.
The club are due to decide whether he will undergo surgery after another round of tests on Thursday to see how deep the injury is.
