Leeds United Prepare Loan Bid For Newcastle United’s Alan Smith
Leeds United are contemplating signing Newcastle United midfielder Alan
Smith on-loan to boost their bid for promotion to the Premier League.
The 30-year-old has become a fringe player at St James’ Park and Toon boss
Alan Pardew is ready to let him leave to get some match action in the
Championship.
The England international is out of contract at Newcastle at the end of the
season and this could be his chance to prove he is back to full fitness and
still has plenty to offer.
Smith began his career at Elland Road and became a hero as he helped his
team into the Champions League semi-final under David O’Leary.
But Leeds suffered the humiliation of relegation in 2004 despite the best
efforts of Smith, who played as a striker.
He turned into a traitor when he moved to arch-rivals Manchester United but
his time there was ruined by horrific leg break.
Smith was never the same player after that injury and tried to resurrect his
career at Newcastle, only for more injuries to disrupt his rhythm.
Pardew is also willing to loan out highly-rated Northern Ireland starlet
Shane Ferguson and talented Slovenian Haris Vuckic for the rest of the year.
