Chicha out for a month
Javier Hernandez will miss the busy Christmas period after suffering ankle ligament damage during United’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League. The Mexican striker tripped and fell in the opening exchanges at Villa Park, prompting a lengthy stoppage and an early exit on a stretcher.
Speaking after the match, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the worst for Chicharito and pondered his selection dilemma up-front ahead of Wednesday's do or die clash with Basel in the UEFA Champions League.
"I think it is torn ligaments in the ankle and he’ll be out for four weeks," the boss revealed. "We are having a bad time with injuries at the moment but that is why we have a strong squad.
"Danny Welbeck is fit again and fortunately he got 15 minutes (against Villa) which is good, so he is an option for Wednesday. He has not had a lot of football recently which is something I have to consider.
"But Nani did alright through the middle and Valencia did very well for us when he came on, he was excellent. So I have some options up-front. We may have Berbatov fit for Wednesday also, but we are getting our fair share of injuries at the moment."
Hernandez joins Tom Cleverley, Michael Owen, Anderson and the Da Silva twins on the Carrington treatment table and is likely to miss several key fixtures over the festive period.
