Owen Coyle era begins at Latics
Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm the appointment of new manager Owen Coyle.
Following discussions with the club on Friday afternoon, the 46-year-old has now agreed terms to become the 37th manager of the club and begins work immediately. He will be formally presented to the media early next week.
Coyle began his managerial career in 2003 with Falkirk, for whom he also played for on 36 occasions, and in 2003 lifted the First Division title to gain promotion to the Scottish Premier League.
Two years later, the former Republic of Ireland international was named St Johnstone manager, suffering final day heartbreak in the 2006/07 campaign, when his side narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight after finishing second in the league.
In November 2007 he was unveiled as Burnley Manager, and followed up a mid-table finish in his first season with the magnificent achievement of promotion to the Barclays Premier League in his second, guiding the Clarets to victory in the play-off final at Wembley with victory over Sheffield United.
Coyle spent three years at Burnley before moving to the Reebok Stadium to become manager of Bolton Wanderers in 2010, where he had spent two years as a player in the mid-1990s and helped to gain promotion from Division One in 1995.
Whilst at Bolton he was twice named the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month, collecting the award in November 2010 and March 2012. Two-and-a-half years at the Reebok came to an end in October 2012 after 126 games in charge of the Trotters.
