Arsenal will step up the chase for Freiburg midfielder Matthias Ginter after sending Francis Coquelin to the German club on a year-long loan, writes Tom Hopkinson of the Sunday People.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been tracking Ginter, 19, for some time and hopes the deal for Coquelin will work as a sweetener, as the North London side bid to fend off rival interest from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
Ginter - who can also play in defence - is the latest in a long line of talent to emerge from Freiburg's academy.
Meanwhile, Wenger is also monitoring Gareth Barry’s situation at Manchester City. The England international, 32, has a year left on his deal at the Etihad and will only leave if the right deal comes along.

Arsenal are reportedly chasing Freiburg's teenage midfielder Matthias Ginter.

The 19-year-old German, who can also play in defence, has also attracted the interest of Borussia Dortmund.

However, the Gunners are hoping that Francis Coquelin'srecent loan move to Freiburg will give them the edge in landing the youngster, according to the Sunday People.

Ginter was part of the Germany squad that recently competed at the Under-21 European Championship.

Arsenal are on the verge of completing their second signing of the transfer window bringing in young German Matthias Ginter from Freiburg.
The Gunners were expected to spend big this summer, with their pursuit ofLiverpool’s Luis Suarez on-going and potential moves for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Everton’s Marouane Fellaini also widely reported.
However, so far the only addition to the north Londoners squad is French Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.
Ginter is hardly likely have the Emirates faithful jumping with excitement either, but manager Arsene Wenger is confident the versatile 19-year-old will prove a shrewd acquisition.
Ginter is comfortable either in defence or midfield and made 21 appearances in the Bundesliga last season.
According to reports the two clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £6million and the player is expected in north London this week to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.

Arsenal Agree £6.1m Deal to Sign German Wonderkid





Emirates Stadium side bring in hugely talented midfield enforcer.


Arsenal have reportedly reached agreement with Bundesliga side Freiburg to sign young German defensive midfielder Matthias Ginter.
German sources claim that Arsene Wenger’s side have forked out £6.1m to snap up the teenager, who has been capped three times at Under 21 level.
Ginter is considered one of the hottest properties in German football and last term helped his side to secure a fifth place finish, with the rangy midfielder making 26 starts in all competitions.
Arsene Wenger could well do with adding some steel to his midfield, to help bring balance to a side that is jam packed with creative talent. The Gunners have not adequately replaced Alex Song, with Mikel Arteta being left to fill a makeshift holding role last term.
Clearly Ginter is very much one for the future but the Freiburg player has shown over the course of the past 18 months and he is able to make an instant impact in top tier football and if secured could well have a significant part to play in Arsenal’s first team set-up this season.
Wenger has enjoyed shopping in the Bundesliga in recent seasons bringing in full internationals like Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker as well as up and coming talents such as Serge Gnabry and Thomas Eisfeld.
