Tottenham are reportedly closing in on the £6million signing of Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.
With concerns over the injury to Jan Vertonghen, picked up during last week’s Asia Cup defeat to Sunderland, and question marks remaining over the long-term fitness of Younes Kaboul, Andre Villas-Boas is keen to add another centre back to his ranks.
And, according to reports in Romania, Chiriches is the man he has identified to plug the gap.
The 23-year-old is considered to be one of the most promising ball-playing defenders in Europe after catching the eye for Steaua in the Europa League last season.
Chiriches is reported to be heading to England in the next couple of days to complete his move to White Hart Lane with the fee apparently already agreed between the two clubs.

Tottenham are considering a bid for Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.
An injury to Jan Vertonghen in addition to Andre Villas-Boas' concerns over Younes Kaboul's long-term fitness means that a central defender is a sudden priority.
Steven Caulker is among the most promising talents in the Premier League in that position but William Gallas' release has left Spurs' options alarmingly thin and Villas-Boas has identified Chiriches as the ideal candidate to compete for a place alongside club captain Michael Dawson.

Chriches, a 23-year-old Romania international, would command a fee of ?8million (£6.94million), just a fraction of what Spurs expect to receive should they sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
It is understood Sporting Lisbon's Tiago Ilori is another potential recruit. The Portuguese market is one Villas-Boas knows well, but at £8m the 20-year-old represents a more expensive option and one Spurs appear less likely to explore.

Tottenham have opened talks with Steaua Bucharest over a £7.5million move for defender Vlad Chiriches.

Andre Villas-Boas is in the market for a new central-defender after losing William Gallas and allowing Steven Caulker join Cardiff.

And Chiriches, 23, has been identified by the Spurs manager as one of the men he wants to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the September 2 transfer window.

Tottenham and Steaua Bucharest are in advanced talks over defender Vlad Chiriches, Sky Sports understands.

The 23-year-old Romania international has been a target for Spurs all summer but a deal looked to have fallen through at the start of this month.

Now the two clubs look set to announce a deal of around £7million in the coming days for the highly-rated defender.

Steaua coach Laurentiu Reghecampf has now revealed that Chiriches is set to join Tottenham after their forthcoming Champions League play-off second leg with Legia Warsaw on Tuesday.

"Chiri's condition is good and the clubs have agreed to transfer him. I'm very happy for him," Reghecampf said after Steaua's 2-2 draw with Gaz Metan Medias on Saturday evening.

"I hope he will help us on Tuesday night and of course that he stays healthy.

"The club made ​​money on him and I cannot say the amount for which he is transferred, but it is very high."

It is believed that a fee of around £7million has been agreed, with the centre back leaving Steaua for Tottenham after their Champions League play-off second leg with Legia Warsaw on Tuesday.

After Steaua’s 2-2 draw with Gaz Metan on Saturday, Reghecampf said, “Owner Becali told me there’s an agreement between the clubs, Vlad will leave after the game vs Legia (on Tuesday).We can consider the deal for Chiriches done, great news for the boy. The money will help us a lot.”

Personal terms between Chiriches and Tottenham are yet to be agreed and if the deal does go through, the defender will be competing with the likes of Michael Dawson, Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul for the first team centre-back position.

The 23-year old has gained a reputation as one of the best young defenders in Romania. Calm and composed on the ball, Chiriches has caught the attention of big clubs due to his impressive performances in the Europa League for Steaua in the last few seasons. The defender has already been capped 19 times by the Romanian National team.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed the club are hoping to sign Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.
Steaua claimed earlier this week that a deal for Chiriches to move to Tottenham was close to being sealed with the Romanian side resigned to losing the highly-rated defender.
Villas-Boas is keen to bolster his defensive options after selling Steven Caulker to Cardiff City and after admitting his interest in Chiriches he joked that they may lose him as they had done when Chelsea stole in to sign Willian from right under their noses.
"Vlad Chiriches, there is an interest in the player," said Villas-Boas. "Maybe somebody steals him as well!
"I'm telling you we have looked to strengthen our backline with the departure of Steven Caulker, last year we had Younes [Kaboul] injured for the season but we had five, so we are looking for the position and we are going to go ahead with our re-strengthening."
Villas-Boas refused to criticise Willian for snubbing Tottenham to move London rivals Chelsea instead.
"The answer that I want to tell you is Willian made a choice to join Chelsea and the only I can wish him is good luck because he is a person I have a good relationship and he has decided to join another club," added Willian.
"Good luck to him ... he made a choice, that he feels is important for the development of his career, good luck to him."
