Newcastle enter race for McCarthy as they look for Cabaye replacement


Newcastle have stepped into the battle for James McCarthy as they look to beat Everton to the Wigan midfielder.
Wigan want at least £15m for the 22-year-old but both clubs are looking to open with offers of around £8m.

Everton ideally need to sell first while Newcastle are awaiting an improved offer from Arsenal for Yohan Cabaye.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is steeling himself to lose the French midfielder.
Pardew told the Chronicle: 'You can't say he is definitely going to stay, so the mindset of the player is such that we need to be on guard.
'We are on the case with that. We have to be armed. We need to resolve it.
'If he goes, good luck to him. Bye, bye. We need to replace him with somebody as good.'
Sunderland are considering a loan for Inter Milan midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic, 25, as well as Ki Sung-Yeung from Swansea, while Cardiff are in talks with Heerenveen over a £4m deal for prolific Iceland striker Alfred Finnbogason, 24.

Transfer news: Roberto Martinez denies Everton bid for Wigan's James McCarthy



Everton have not made a bid for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.

The Republic of Ireland international has been linked with a move to Merseyside ever since Roberto Martinez left the DW Stadium to
become David Moyes' replacement.

Martinez signed McCarthy during his time at Wigan and remains a big fan, but he said: "There has been no bid made.

"I think it's quite easy to understand that James is a player I signed at a young age and I've got huge admiration for him, so it doesn't take anyone (much) to create a little bit of a story. But there has been no bid."

The Spaniard also confirmed there has been no follow-up offer from Manchester United for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

A joint £28m bid was rejected as "insulting" by Everton last week, and Martinez said: "No, there's been no other news.

"I know there's going to be talk about the transfer window but that's not what we're focusing on now.

"We are in a position where we don't have to sell. I don't think there's been any misguidance. We know exactly where we are internally. We're very, very strong financially, and we don't have to sell at all."
