Frankfurt - Joachim Löw has named his squad for next month's FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers with Bastian Schweinsteiger back and both Sidney Sam and Max Kruse earning recalls.
FC Bayern Munich midfielder Schweinsteiger missed Germany's 3-3 draw with Paraguay earlier this month due to injury, but he returns to a 24-man squad which will face Austria in Munich and travel to the Faroe Islands over the coming fortnight.
Sam and Kruse earn second chance
Sam and Kruse were involved in Germany’s post-season tour of the USA and they have both been recalled after convincing Löw during the first few weeks of the Bundesliga season.
"They both showed themselves to be very good alternatives for the attack during our USA trip and they have started the season well with their clubs and have deserved another chance," said the Germany coach, who will be without the injured Lukas Podolski
Brazil aim
Germany have a five-point lead at the top of Group C over Austria, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland and their aim is to book their ticket for Brazil with two wins in these two matches. “We’re totally focused on these games against Austria and the Faroes,” said Low. “We may have an advantage at the top of our World Cup qualifying group, but we've not qualified yet.
“Our clear aim is to take a further step towards that in these two games,” added Low, who would prefer not to go into the final two qualifiers against Ireland and Sweden needing wins. That may be something they can practically take for granted against the Faroes, but not so much against Austria.
Neighbourly battle
“We know that our neighbours are always very motivated when they play Germany,” said Low. “They press well and are quick on the counter-attack. Austria are going to give it everything to keep their chances of qualifying alive so we’re going to have to be fully focused."
"For the Faroes, it's going to be the game of the year and of course they'll want to frustrate us," continued Low. "I'm totally convinced of our strengths, but of course we can't afford to take it easy there. We certainly must not underestimate our opponents and we will prepare for this game seriously.
Ton-up Lahm
Captain Philipp Lahm will pick up his 100th cap in his home Allianz Arena if he is picked next Friday, but there is no room in the squad for the injured Ilkay Gündogan and Marcell Jansen.
