Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini to play for Belgium despite injury




Manchester United and Belgium's Marouane Fellaini is fit to face Croatia on Friday despite ongoing concerns with a wrist injury.

The United midfielder missed Saturday's 2-1 win over Sunderland after suffering the wrist problem in training and

it had been feared he would be ruled out of action for three weeks.

United boss David Moyes said over the weekend: "He's got a wrist injury. He's going to see a specialist. It doesn't sound too good but we'll wait and find out on Monday."

Although the medical diagnosis is that he will need surgery in the "near future", it is a welcome boost in the short term for his international club and United.

Belgium have impressed so far in their quest to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, having won seven and drawn one in their opening eight games and are top of group A.

It wasn't all good news for the Belgians though, suffering an injury blow with Manchester City centre half Vincent Kompany declared unfit with a thigh problem.

Marouane Fellaini could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after damaging his wrist.

Manchester United’s only big-money signing of the summer missed Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sunderland and is

due to see a specialist to determine if surgery will be necessary.

United manager David Moyes confirmed the Belgian had damaged ligaments and admitted the initial prognosis was worrying.

‘He’s got a wrist injury. He’s going to see a specialist,’ Moyes said. ‘It doesn’t sound too good but we’ll wait and find out on Monday.’

If United’s worst fears are confirmed and Fellaini requires surgery he could be out for over a month.

There was better news on Fellaini, who requires surgery on his wrist but will be available for both matches as Wilmots said it would be "adequately supported" by a brace.
The Belgian FA’s Twitter feed said he, along with Zenit St Petersburg duo Axel Witsel and Nicolas Lombaerts, will join training on Tuesday morning, having missed Monday’s session.
Wilmots explained: “Marouane has suffered a wrist ligament injury and will have to undergo surgery. He will join the group later and use a splint.
“As far as I’m concerned, he is in principle able to play on Friday. That does not mean that he will automatically play.
I also haven’t heard from Manchester United asking for him to be operated on as soon as possible.”
