Sydney FC Down Jets In Season Opener Sydney FC have kicked off the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season by defeating the Newcastle Jets 2-0 thanks to goals from Alessandro Del Piero and Joel Chianese at Allianz Stadium.
Frank Farina’s new look side dominated the majority of proceedings giving the 20,103 crowd good reason to be optimistic.
Del Piero was instrumental in both goals, single-handedly beating three Newcastle players to score the opener before winning a key tackle and feeding Chianese for the second.Head Coach Frank Farina handed five players their first Sydney FC A-League start with off-season signings Marc Warren,
Pedj Bojic, Nikola Petkovic and Richard Garcia all included while late injury replacement Matt Thompson getting a start in midfield.
The opening stages were barren in terms of chances until the 20th minute when the Sky Blues almost took the lead. Chianese made a vital interception in his own box,
nicking the ball away from Sam Gallaway.Sydney countered with speed with Del Piero who drove at the Newcastle defence before teeing up Chianese.
The striker had run the length of the field but his first touch let him down and Birighitti was able to fall on the ball.
Minutes later Thompson was unlucky not to score on debut with a terrific volley from 25 metres, which cannoned off the crossbar hitting Jets keeper’
Mark Birighitti in the back and away to safety. The pressure told on
37 minutes with Del Piero scoring his first goal as Sydney FC Captain.
Warren made an interception and fed Del Piero who made the most of confusion between Chapman and Caravella to turn and poke the ball into the far corner.
Del Piero nearly doubled his tally on the brink of half time with a 30 metre strike which narrowly missed the crossbar.
From the first attack of the second half, the Sky Blues doubled their advantage.
Del Piero dispossessed Caravella on half way to give Sydney a 3 on 2 advantage. The Italian drove forward before passing to the unmarked
Chianese on the right edge of the box who struck a powerful shot into the top right of the net. The Jets’ Adam Taggart headed over the bar from a Gallaway cross and Goodwin curled a free-kick straight into the arms of Sydney keeper Janjetovic.
Sydney FC weathered the brief flurry and had the ball in the net again when Garcia finished from six yards, only to see the offside flag correctly raised after Del Piero,
Chianese and Garcia all tried in vain to beat Birighitti.Jets’ midfielder Jacob Pepper hit the crossbar with a header late on but Sydney weren’t to be denied the three points
and
look forward to welcoming fierce rivals Western Sydney Wanderers to the Allianz Stadium in two weeks time. Sydney FC 2 (Del Piero 37’, Chianese 60’) d. Newcastle Jets 0
