FC Basel boss Murat Yakin claims he has been approached by Tottenham to succeed Andre Villas-Boas as new first team coach.

The 39-year-old Swiss has been mentioned alongside Guus Hiddink and Fabio Capello as a potential successor following AVB’s axing on Monday.
And there has been strong rumours coming out of Italy that he was also target of Lazio.
But Yakin has further fuelled speculation he could take over at White Hart Lane by telling Swiss website ’20 minutes’:
‘I had no contact with Lazio, but with Tottenham, yes.’


Yakin’s stock has risen this season after he twice beat Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in their Champions League group,
although Basle eventually failed to make the cut for the knock-out stages.
Tottenham’s technical director Franco Baldini was in Basel to watch the second of those wins
over the Blues last month and is said to have been impressed with what he saw.


Yakin, a former Grasshoppers, Stuttgart and Basle defender, won 49 caps for Switzerland and cut his managerial teeth with lower division Swiss clubs Concordia,
Thun and Luzern before taking the reins at Basel in October 2012.
He was also linked with the Sunderland job before Gus Poyet was handed the reins at the Stadium of Light following Paolo di Canio’s sacking at the end of September.


Spurs have meanwhile put Tim Sherwood in temporary charge of first team affairs while they compile a shortlist of prospective candidates.

Basel deny that Tottenham have made contact about Murat Yakin



Swiss side FC Basel have denied claims that Tottenham have contacted them about their coach Murat Yakin.

The former Swiss international has impressed since taking charge of Basel last year, and guided them to the domestic title

whilst also eliminating Tottenham from the Europa League. Reports in Switzerland have claimed that Spurs had made enquires about Yakin


and his possibly availability and that his agent was even due in London for talks.

However, Basel have insisted that they have heard nothing from Tottenham

Their president Bernhard Heusler told Swiss daily Blick: "There has been no contact between the clubs."

Yakin, who is currently on holiday as the Swiss league enjoys its winter break, has also been linked with Lazio - but he insists he has not heard anything from either club.

"I am enjoying my holidays. I have had no contact with Lazio or Tottenham," he is quoted by Blick.

SkyBet currently list Yakin as fifth favourite, 14/1, for the Spurs job - with caretaker Tim Sherwood and Glenn Hoddle the current favourites.

Basel coach Murat Yakin has denied he has spoken to Tottenham about replacing Andre Villas-Boas.

Yakin, 39, has impressed since taking charge of Basel in October last year,
leading the club to the 2013 Swiss title as well as eliminating Spurs en route to last season's Europa League semi-final.
They are currently top of the Swiss Super League going into the winter break,
and also attracted praise after beating Chelsea home and away in their Champions League group this year,
even if they ultimately missed out on a place in the knockout phase.

Yakin's efforts have seen him listed among the candidates to replace Villas-Boas, who was dismissed after Sunday's 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool,
and he has also been linked with Serie A side Lazio, where Vladimir Petkovic is under heavy pressure.
However, he has told Blick: "I am enjoying my holidays. I have had no contact with Lazio or Tottenham."
Basel president Bernhard Heusler added: "There has been no contact between the clubs."

Despite the denials, Blick sources claim Yakin's agent has travelled to London for talks with Spurs,
although the Swiss tabloid reports that the language barrier may be an issue.


Tim Sherwood, who will lead Spurs in a caretaker capacity alongside Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey, has been tipped as a frontrunner for the permanent job.
