Marseille agree on Bielsa coaching deal

Slumping French giants Marseille say they have reached "an agreement in principle" with Marcelo Bielsa to take over as coach.

The 58-year-old Argentine, who has coached Chile and Athletic Bilbao, has long been the longtime favourite to succeed caretaker boss Jose Anigo.

"There is an agreement in principle with Bielsa," said Marseille president Vincent Labrune after Sunday's 0-0 draw with Lille.

"The agreement will be submitted to the contracts department but we can state that we are relatively confident that things will be finalised in the coming days."

Anigo took charge of the Marseille first team in December following the sacking of Elie Baup but will return at the season's end to his primary role of sporting director.

He had been involved in the search for a new coach and Bielsa, whose last job was in charge of Athletic Bilbao,

was the frontrunner having spent the last two weeks in France studying his prospective new employers.

"I think he's a good coach, everyone knows that, and he has the right charisma for a club like ours," said Anigo last week.

"He has spent a lot of time here and has seen the structures of the club."

Bielsa, 58, made his name as a coach at Newell's Old Boys in his homeland and went on to coach Argentina before leading Chile at the 2010 World Cup.

He left Athletic at the end of last season after two seasons with the Basque club.

Marseille are sixth in Ligue 1 and look destined to miss out on European football next season.

Marseille are moving closer to finalising the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as their new coach for next season.

The Argentinian, who most recently managed Spanish side Athletic Bilbao and has led both Chile and his home country to World Cups, was linked with the upcoming vacancy last week and club president Vincent Labrune has announced that a deal has now been agreed "in principle".

Marseille have been under the caretaker management of sporting director Jose Anigo since parting company with Elie Baup in December and are languishing in sixth place in Ligue 1, five points adrift of the European places.

Anigo has no intention of taking the job on a long-term basis and has been involved in the search for a new full-time manager, which now appears to have settled on Bielsa.

"In spirit, we have an agreement with Marcelo Bielsa," Labrune told L'Equipe.

"We are in agreement on the sporting project. We have an agreement in principle which is now subject to the drafting of contracts.

"Without getting caught up in absolute euphoria, we are confident that the issue will be wrapped up. I can say we will have a very good coach for next season."

Marseille are currently coached by Jose Anigo, who replaced Elie Baup on a temporary basis in December. Bielsa had long been rumoured to be the former European champions' first choice to take over from Anigo at the end of this season. Those rumours went into overdrive when he watched Marseille's 3-2 win at Montpellier on 11 April, with the club then admitting they were in negotiations. Contract talks had been progressing with Marseille president Vincent Labrune saying after the club's 0-0 draw with Lille on 21 April: "In the spirit of things we have an agreement with Marcelo Bielsa on a sporting project." More recently, Anigo, who is also the club's sports director, and therefore in charge of recruitment, said: "It's normal that there is some time between an agreement in principle and the signing (of the contract). But the signature is on the right track. It will happen because there are no major obstacles." Bielsa was the coach of Bilbao when they knocked Manchester United out of the UEFA Europa League in 2012, before going on to lose to Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the final. His only club successes as a coach came in the 1990s with Newell's Old Boys, whom he led to three Argentinian titles.

Marseille have appointed Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa as the club's new head coach.

The long-expected announcement follows weeks of discussions between Marseille officials and the 58-year-old, whose last club was Athletic Bilbao.

Bielsea also led Argentina for a six-year spell from 1998 to 2004.

Marseille announced on their website: "This Tuesday afternoon Marcelo Bielsa has signed his contract to coach at Olympique Marseille.

"The Argentinian coach will leave this evening for Rosario. His return to Marseille is fixed for June 16 for the return to training, at 6pm.

"Marcelo Bielsa, together with his staff, will hold a press conference earlier in the day on June 16 at a time to be confirmed."

Bielsa, 58, steps in after a difficult season for Marseille. The French giants were relishing a Champions League campaign,

but European dreams went sour when the team lost all six of their group games.

Elie Baup was sacked as head coach in December and in his place former boss Jose Anigo assumed control on a caretaker basis.

Marseille could not build up momentum to challenge the leading sides in Ligue 1 and finished sixth in the table, missing out on a place in Europe for next season.

Anigo, who moved from his role as sporting director to take charge of the first team, announced in early May he would be leaving the Stade Velodrome club.
