Moyes: Gone are the days of long-term planning at UnitedJun 01, 2014 09:59 By David Lynch
Former Reds boss believes he could have turned things around at Old Trafford if given more time but says he has now "moved on" from his sacking. David Moyes has broken his silence on his sacking by Manchester United to slam for the club for ditching their "long-term" approach. The Scot endured a disastrous reign at Old Trafford after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm, with results under his guidance consigning the Reds to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League. As well as failing to defend their title, United also suffered shock exits from the FA Cup and Capital One Cup,
with the only small positive coming in their progression to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
But, writing in the Sunday Times, Moyes has claimed that he would have turned things around had he been given more time.
“I never had the chance to thank the Manchester United supporters for the backing they gave me during my time as manager. I wish them every success in the future.
“They now appreciate, I am sure, that things are changing at their club and it could well be that gone are the days of long-term planning. They were fully aware of the task I had.
It was unfortunate I wasn’t given more time to succeed.” Moyes was appointed on the recommendation of retiring legend Ferguson,
and insists he always had full backing from his fellow Glaswegian, even toward the end of his time in charge.
“
I have spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson on several occasions and we met recently at a dinner in London. I believe I had nothing but support from him," he continued.
“He advised me of some changes that had to be made. I took his advice and started to implement the necessary changes.
I became aware of other changes that had to be made and put plans in place.”
Moyes also revealed that he has been approached about a number of vacancies at other clubs but is unsure whether he wishes to jump immediately back into management.
“Since leaving, I have received some very good offers and am tempted by one or two of them,” he added. “I have not closed the door on anything and am open-minded about my next step in management, and whether it will be in the UK or abroad.
“Another possibility is that I may choose to have a break and enjoy watching and observing football throughout the world. What I do know for sure is that I have moved on.”
