The award for the most impressive entrance to the 2014 FIFA World Cup goes to FC Bayern München's Thomas Müller and Germany, who tore Portugal apart in their opening Group G fixture in Salvador, where the Bundesliga flag was flying higher and prouder than ever.

Müller scored a memorable hat-trick, demonstrating precisely why he was only last week awarded a new five-year contract by the record German champions. He had Bayern team-mate Mario Götze to thank for his opener - a well-taken penalty after the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder was tugged to the ground

Götze nearly made it two with a deflected effort, but the danger did not end there as Toni Kroos' corner was emphatically headed home by Dortmund defender Mats Hummels. Portugal were reduced to ten men when Pepe took out his frustration on dangerman Müller, who swept in his second of the game soon after.

Müller headed a promising opportunity over in the second half, but there was still time for the top-scorer of the 2010 World Cup to shoot to the top of the charts once again, tapping in from close range before leaving the field to a deserved standing ovation. The sight of Hummels limping away late on put a slight dampener on things, but a magical Müller ensured the lasting memory of Germany's 100th World Cup fixture will be a positive one.
