Transfer news: Feyenoord defender Stefan De Vrij makes Lazio switch




Lazio have announced the signing of Holland international centre-back Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord on undisclosed terms.

The 22-year-old played in all seven of Holland's matches as they secured third place at the World Cup finals in Brazil,

and he scored his first goal for Oranje during the memorable 5-1 group-stage victory over Spain.

A tweet released by Lazio's official account on Wednesday evening read: "Lazio can confirm the permanent signing of Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord."

The Krimpenerwaard native had been linked with a move to Manchester United, where he would have reunited with ex-Holland boss Louis van Gaal.

But it soon became clear that Lazio had won the race to secure his services

when he arrived in Rome on Monday night in order to undergo medical examinations the following day.

De Vrij told Feyenoord's official website: "I didn't make my choice to join Lazio overnight.

It is an informed decision which came about following many discussions with the club, where I had a good feeling.

"That good feeling has been reaffirmed over the recent days in which I have been completing the transfer.

"Lazio really proved that they wanted to have me and I am very happy I have made this move.

"I hope to become a more complete defender in Italy. I'll be playing against some world-class strikers, and that's a great challenge."

De Vrij has won 19 international caps in total since making his debut against Belgium in August 2012.

He is a product of Feyenoord's youth academy and made his first-team debut in 2009.

He follows midfielder Marco Parolo, striker Filip Djordjevic and full-back Dusan Basta in becoming a new recruit at the Stadio Olimpico

as Lazio look to improve on the ninth-placed finish they achieved in the 2013-14 Serie A season.

Lazio close on De Vrij

Lazio are reportedly closing in on Feyenoord’s Dutch international Stefan De Vrij in a deal worth ?8m.

The Biancocelesti have long been interested in the defender, who starred at the World Cup in Brazil and came away with a bronze medal.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Lazio have now raised their offer to ?7m and it is very close to Feyenoord’s ?9m asking price.

It is believed that another meeting on Sunday will help push through the strategy and on Monday the agreement could be reached for ?8m.

Transfer news: Lazio close to wrapping up deal for Stefan De Vrij

Holland international defender Stefan De Vrij is poised to become a Lazio player after arriving in Italy for a medical.

It was announced on Monday that the Feyenoord defender was travelling to Rome to put the finishing touches to a move.

Manchester United were also reported to be in the hunt for the 22-year-old, with former Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal eager to bring in players he knows.

However, reports in Italy suggest that Lazio have already agreed a five-year contract with a player who will cost around 9million euros (£7.1m).

Lazio coach Stefano Pioli told Lazio Style Radio: “I cannot wait to meet him and train him.”

Director of communications Stefano De Martino added: “We welcome with joy the best defender at the World Cup.

“He is an international-level signing.”

Lazio seal deal for De Vrij

Lazio have confirmed the capture of "the best defender at the World Cup", Stefan de Vrij, from Feyenoord.

The 22-year-old started all seven of Netherlands' games in Brazil this summer and is now poised to complete a move from Rotterdam to Rome.

“Stefan De Vrij will arrive tonight [Monday] at Fiumicino airport and tomorrow morning [Tuesday] at 8am will undergo his medical at the Paideia clinic,”

the Biancocelesti's director of communications Stefano De Martino told Lazio Style Radio.

“We welcome with joy the best defender at the World Cup. He is an international-level signing.”

Lazio have been looking to strengthen their defence this summer and were left disappointed after being pipped to the signing of Cagliari's Davide Astori by city rivals Roma.

However, they are now set to seal a reported ?9 million deal for De Vrij, who had also been linked with Premier League outfit Manchester United.
