Southampton: Ryan Bertrand joins from Chelsea on season-long loan

Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand has become Southampton's third summer signing as they rebuild after selling five players for £92m.
The 24 year-old has joined on a season-long loan but, according to the Press Association, there is an option to make the deal permanent for up to £10m.
Saints have already signed striker Graziano Pelle from Feyenoord and midfielder Dusan Tadic from FC Twente.
"I'm very happy to be able to bring Ryan in," manager Ronald Koeman said.
"I spoke to him on Monday afternoon and I was very impressed with his attitude and how keen he was to play games for Southampton."
Bertrand has been at Chelsea since 2006 but has only made 28 league appearances for them and spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa.
He was famously selected in the starting XI when the Blues won the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 2012.
"I had a lot of options and a lot of interest but, having met the people and spoken to the manager
and seen what the club is about, in my mind this was the perfect decision," said Bertrand, who has won two caps for England.

Saints have been under scrutiny in recent days in the wake of the exodus of players from St Mary's this summer.
Teenage full-back Calum Chambers became the fifth player to leave following his £16m move to Arsenal on Monday.
Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have all joined Liverpool while left-back Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United.
Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and striker Jay Rodriguez were also strongly linked with Tottenham but Saints chairman Ralph Krueger insisted on Tuesday the pair would not be sold.

"This is another important step forward in terms of rebuilding our first-team squad with exciting English talent at its core."

“Left-back is an important position in the team because it is quite specialised

in terms of the attributes needed to play there, so it is nice to get this signing completed because it gives us some stability.”

Bertrand added: “For me personally, this is another chance to play and a chance to join a fantastic club that’s moving in the right direction.

“With the set-up the club’s got, the manager it has coming in and the ethos it has, I thought this was a perfect match.

“The manager’s name speaks for itself, so to play under somebody like that will be good for me. His ethos and the way he plays matches my game.

Transfer news: Southampton sign Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea on a four-and-a-half-year deal

Southampton have completed the signing of Ryan Bertrand on a permanent deal from Chelsea.


The 25-year-old full-back originally joined the Saints at the start of this campaign on a season-long loan, but he has now signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.


Bertrand was sent off during Sunday’s 1-0 loss at home to Swansea for a challenge on Modou Barrow and will have to serve a three-match suspension.


But he has generally fitted in very well for the Saints following the sale of last season’s regular left-back, Luke Shaw, making 27 appearances this season and scoring twice.


Bertrand had been at Chelsea since 2005 but spent time on loan at five different clubs before beginning to feature regularly for the Blues.


He made his Premier League debut for the Londoners in April 2011 and played 14 times the following season, incredibly making his Champions League debut in the final against Bayern Munich, which the Blues won on penalties.


Bertrand went on to score his first Chelsea goal in the 2012 Community Shield and was a mainstay of the side that season.


However, his appearances became less frequent following the return to the club of manager Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2013 and he was loaned out to Aston Villa towards the end of last season.


An England regular at age-group levels, Bertrand has two senior caps, having come off the bench against Italy and Ukraine in 2012.
