Siem de Jong facing FOUR months on sidedlines SIEM de Jong is facing up to FOUR months on the sidelines at Newcastle United. Newcastle’s £6m summer signing
has suffered a torn groin muscle. And the problem is likely to keep de Jong out until early next year. Luckless De Jong had a lengthy spell out with Ajax last term after suffering a collapsed lung.
And he was troubled by calf and toe problems after linking up with his new club in July.
The 25-year-old’s latest injury is a huge blow to United’s under-fire manager Alan Pardew, who loaned forward Hatem Ben Arfa to Hull City on transfer deadline day.
De Jong took Ben Arfa’s No10 squad number.
Newcastle failed to sign the extra striker that many fans felt the club badly needed before the transfer window closed on Monday night.
And much attacking responsibilty was to rest on the shoulders of vice-captain de Jong, who was signed for his vision, passing and goalscoring.
The Holland international’s injury, which was suffered in training, is still being assessed.
But the Gazette understands that the club fear that de Jong will be out until January. Without him, Pardew’s attacking options look limited, though teenage winger Rolando Aarons has impressed.

Siem De Jong blow leaves Newcastle United facing early injury crisisSep 05, 2014 11:04 By Mark Douglas
Newcastle United's goalscoring problems have been exacerbated by Siem De Jong's groin injury, which may rule him out until December Newcastle United’s goal-scoring worries have deepened with Siem de Jong out until December with a groin injury. United’s decision not to pursue another striker before Monday’s deadline always looked like a risk
and now de Jong has suffered an injury in training which means that he will not play for Newcastle for the foreseeable future.
It is understood to be a groin tear, which could mean a possible four months on the sidelines – and force Alan Pardew to completely re-draw his plans for this season.
De Jong was supposed to be vital to Pardew’s system this year but he has only been able to start him in the Premier League once, in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace.
There will now be fears about how long it will take the marquee summer signing to get up to speed.
The Holland striker – who was not part of the squad picked by new Netherlands boss this week –
suffered a serious injury with Ajax last season and played only once from March until the end of the season.
When he signed for Newcastle he underwent a thorough medical and the problems suffered in pre-season and this week are unrelated to last year’s injury.
