Marco van Basten to step down as AZ Alkmaar coach due to health issues

Marco van Basten is to step down as coach of AZ Alkmaar as his health issues persist, Dutch media said on Friday.

The former European Footballer of the Year, who turns 50 next month,

joined the Dutch club on a two-year deal at the start of the season but has been on a leave of absence due to stress.

He was given time off by the club and missed their last match before the club extended his time away from the game for a further fortnight.

AZ have not given any details of Van Basten’s problems but Dutch media reported that he had been suffering from heart palpitations since the death of his father in July.

Van Basten’s coaching career began with Ajax Amsterdam’s reserves in 2003 but a year later he was named Holland coach, managing the side’s 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008 campaigns.

He then spent less than a year in charge at Ajax, resigning in May 2009 following the side’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

He did not work for three years until joining Heerenveen in 2012, spending two seasons there before moving to AZ.

His assistant Alex Pastoor is expected to be named replacement, the media reports added.

Marco van Basten is to step down to an assistant coach role at AZ Alkmaar on his return to the club after health issues.

Van Basten has been on leave for the last two weeks due to health problems, and although AZ ended speculation the club's head coach was to leave completely, they announced on Tuesday he would take on a secondary role, signing a new contract as an assistant coach until 2016.

"I have found that in recent times the role of head coach was causing me increasing physical and mental discomfort," the former Holland international said on the club's website.

"Therefore I decided I had to be honest with myself and with AZ. I wanted to return, but not as head coach. After extensive discussions with the club and (assistants) Alex Pastoor and Dennis Haar, we have found a suitable solution for all.

"I am delighted with my new role which is a little more in the background. I want to help the young players here."

Pastoor is in line to become the new head coach, having taken on the role in Van Basten's absence, but director of football Earnest Stewart said a deal is yet to be finalised.
