Bartomeu calls Presidential elections

President Jose Maria Bartomeu has announced that he will be calling Presidential elections at the end of this season.
Bartomeu explained he’d taken the decision “to lower the tension at the Club right now” – a tension which is “disproportionate and doesn’t reflect the reality of the Club”.
The President reminded the media at his press conference of the Club’s buoyant economic situation and the Espain Barça project, approved by members in a referendum last year.

Bartomeu also announced that he will be a candidate for the post and called on all other future aspirants to respect “fair play” and get behind the team for what is left of this season.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona president says striker is 'happy and will stay'




Lionel Messi is happy at Barcelona and will stay with the club until at least the end of his contract in 2018, says president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Reports in Spain suggest  that La Liga's all-time record goalscorer, 27, is unhappy under coach Luis Enrique.

But Bartomeu said: "Messi has a contract until 2018, he is happy with the club and wants to win more titles.

"There is nothing to panic about in that regard. Messi is the central figure. The team is built around him."

He added: "The whole footballing world knows that Barca don't want to sell Messi. For me he is the best player in the world."

Messi started on the bench as Barcelona lost to Real Sociedad at the weekend.

The defeat meant they remained second in the La Liga table, a point behind fierce rivals Real Madrid.

In November, Enrique insisted Messi was "delighted" to be at Barca  after reports linked the Argentine with a move away from the Nou Camp.

Talk of a transfer has resurfaced in recent days, with rumours Messi could be interested in a move to English Premier League side Chelsea.

Catalan radio has claimed that the London club has contacted Messi's father and agent Jorge.

But Bartomeu told a news conference: "These news stories are created to try to damage FC Barcelona. They are written with the intention of creating conflicts where conflict does not exist.

"Ultimately these are questions that you have to direct to Enrique and Messi, but from the contact I have made they are getting on fine and want to win titles.

"Enrique has a project that he is working on. Of course, we always want to win, but there is no doubting him.

"All the turmoil around the club will affect the team. That is precisely why we have called an election."

Bartomeu has called elections for the end of the season after conceding the club has been affected by "an astonishing amount of tension over the last few weeks".

He backed Enrique to stay at the club, with the Barcelona coach saying earlier on Wednesday he does not feel under any pressure ahead of Thursday's Copa del Rey clash with Elche.

"I haven't received an ultimatum from the president," said Enrique. "I've never had any such threat in my entire career."

Asked if Messi was still happy with life at Barcelona, Enrique said: "I don't want to comment. We know things change and a month is a long time."

The former Barca player added: "I have the same relationship with all my players that I had at the start of the season. That has not changed."

During the press conference to announce, Presidential elections at the end of the 2014/15 season,
Josep Maria Bartomeu also spoke about the current sporting situation of the first team and defended the figures of Leo Messi and Luis Enrique.
Following reports of a rift between the two, President Bartomeu insisted that the “best player in the world” and the coach had a “fine” relationship and made it clear:
“we can’t go around rebutting every story that appears in the press”.

Josep Maria Bartomeu made a fierce defence of Leo Messi, reminding the assembled media:
“Messi has a contract, he’s happy and he wants to win things with Barça.
We are very relaxed about our relationship with him. He is the leader of the team, he’s the best player in the world and is playing with some great players at Barça.
Messi is a leader in the squad and that is the way we want him to continue”.

After Luis Enrique declared this lunchtime that his position had been weakened by the departure of Andoni Zubizarreta because of the relationship between them,
Bartomeu made it clear that he viewed the coach’s reaction as “normal – they had worked together a lot, but now we are starting a new era.
Over the next few days I will be announcing the new sporting director and I am sure he will work well with Luis Enrique, just as Zubizarreta has done so far.
Luis Enrique has got a new project on his hands. He’s working with a lot of new players and he is the right man for the job.
You can’t put together a new project in three or four months – he has a contract till 2016 and we are on the right track”.

Bartomeu gave a few clues as to the new sporting director, insisting: “we aren’t looking for anyone from outside.
We want someone with Barça in their blood and who is closely linked to our idea of football”.
The President also explained that “Puyol’s leaving is not connected to Zubizarreta’s departure.
He has new projects in mind and he wants to get ready for them. I am clear that Puyol will return to FC Barcelona”.
