Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to miss England's crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania with a hamstring strain.

The Arsenal star limped off during the second half of Monday night's FA Cup win over Manchester United.

And Sportsmail understands initial fears are that the midfielder will miss up to four weeks with the injury.

He underwent a scan on Tuesday and club medics will hold further checks before making a definitive diagnosis.

But Oxlade-Chamberlain is a huge doubt for the clash against Lithuania and the friendly against Italy.

Roy Hodgson names his squad for the double-header at next week.

The news will come as a blow to Arsene Wenger despite the euphoria following the win at Old Trafford.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss a string of Arsenal matches including next week's Champions League clash in Monaco and next month's league visit of Liverpool.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain faces wait on hamstring injury

Arsenal face an anxious wait to find out the extent of the hamstring injury to winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The 21-year-old, who pulled up during Monday's 2-1 FA Cup win at Manchester United, was having a scan on Wednesday.

His results will not be clear until later in the week, but Oxlade-Chamberlain is unlikely to face West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

There is also doubt whether he will be fit for England's qualifier with Lithuania on 27 March.

England face a friendly against Italy four days after the Euro 2016 qualifier.

Wenger told the Arsenal website: "Chamberlain has a hamstring strain. The only thing we don't know is how bad it is, because usually the scans are only done 48 hours after the accident.

"That will be done on Wednesday."

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had only just returned to the side following a groin problem, could also miss the second leg of Arsenal's Champions League tie against Monaco next Tuesday. Wenger's side trail their French opponents 3-1.

In the Premier League, the Gunners travel to Newcastle on 21 March before they face top-four rivals Liverpool on 4 April following the international break.

Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been ruled out for "three to four weeks" with a hamstring injury, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

The England international, 21, was injured during a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Manchester United on Monday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain only returned at the end of February after a month out because of a groin problem.

"It's frustrating. It's a shame that in the final sprint, he's not there," said Wenger.

England face Lithuania in a Euro 2016 qualifier on March 27 and meet Italy in a friendly four days later.

"He showed on Monday night what a important player he can be for Arsenal and for England," said Wenger.

The Frenchman added defender Gabriel was back in training after pulling a hamstring against QPR on 4 March.
