Skrtel and Ibe set for contract extensions at Liverpool



Liverpool are close to securing the long term futures of Martin Skrtel and Jordon Ibe, according to Sky sources.

Defender Skrtel, 30, has one year left on his current contract, while 19-year-old Ibe, who spent the first half on this season on loan at Derby, sees his deal expire in 2017.

The pair are set to follow vice-captain Jordan Henderson in committing himself to Anfield, after Sky Sports reported on Tuesday he was on the verge of signing on for a further five years - Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge have signed new long-term deals this season.

Skrtel, who had been linked with summer moves to Wolfsburg and Napoli, moved quickly to play down the reports.


“I am not leaving anywhere,” the centre-back said. “Not to Wolfsburg, nor to Naples.”

Skrtel’s intermediary Karol Csonto also confirmed there had been no contact from the German side.

He said: “The only offer which is lying on Martin Skrtel’s table right now is the extension of his contract from Liverpool.

“We have been working on the details, and we will be finalising it soon. It is not true that he has some offer from the German club. I don’t know anything even about their interest.”

Ibe, who joined Liverpool in 2012, returned to Merseyside in January after a loan spell in the Championship.

That moved cup-tied him for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Aston Villa, but the winger has made eight appearances for Brendan Rodgers' side this season, including an eye-catching performance against Everton at Goodison Park.

And despite finding himself under scrutiny in recent weeks having been the latest English footballer pictured holding shisha pipes with team-mate Raheem Sterling, Rodgers is keen to secure the teenager's services on a long-term deal.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has agreed a contract extension with the club after rejecting interest from Inter Milan, according to Sky sources.

The Slovakian international defender was entering the final year of his current contract but is now set sign an extension which will keep him at Anfield for the long term.

The 30-year-old was the subject of interest from Roberto Mancini’s Inter Milan but Skrtel’s agent Karol Csonto confirmed the player rejected the Italian side’s overtures.

“I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” Csonto said. “The deal did not go ahead, but there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool."

Skrtel has become a firm favourite with Liverpool fans since joining from Zenit St Petersburg in 2007 and is closing in on 300 appearances for the club.

He joins Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Jordon Ibe in agreeing new long-term deals with Liverpool in the last 12 months.

Martin Skrtel has signed a new three-year contract with Liverpool FC.

Skrtel, 30, had entered the final 12 months of his current contract, and had expressed concern earlier in the year at what he deemed an “unacceptable” offer from Liverpool.

But after further negotiations, the Slovakian international has now extended his seven-year stay on Merseyside into 2018.

“I think a contract like this is offered to players who are much older than me, or to players who have had health complications,” Skrtel said at the start of June, with Italian giants Inter Milan linked with a move for the 30-year-old.

Skrtel has made a total of 293 appearances for the Reds since joining from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.

He will also join a growing list of first-teamers who have committed their future to the club in the last 12 months, following in the footsteps of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson, Jordon Ibe and Jon Flanagan, all of whom have penned new deals.
