Man Utd forward Wayne Rooney could miss rest of seasonAfter sustaining an injury against his former club at the weekend, Wayne Rooney is looking increasingly likely to miss the rest of the season
Wayne Rooney is facing further tests on a knee injury amid fears that the Manchester United forward sustained ligament damage during the Premier League defeat at Everton on Sunday.Rooney limped off after 88 minutes and was replaced by Robin van Persie after sustaining the injury during the closing stages of the 3-0 defeat.
Although Rooney was deemed fit enough to travel to London for the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year dinner on Sunday evening, initial tests on Monday proved inconclusive.
While Rooney, 29, is not feared to have suffered a serious knee injury, the prospect of damage to the medial ligament could result in the United and England captain being sidelined for up to a month if the worst-case scenario is borne out.
Such a lay-off would force Rooney to miss the remainder of United’s season, with Louis van Gaal’s team facing four games between now and May 24, although the club remain hopeful that the injury will subside sufficiently for the captain to return to action this term. Van Gaal will deliver a definitive update on Rooney’s condition on Friday, but the Dutchman will have been boosted by Van Persie scoring twice in a 4-1 reserve-team win at Fulham last night.
Meanwhile, United and Chelsea will both take on Barcelona as part of the pre-season International Champions Cup at venues across the United States during July. The schedule, confirmed yesterday , will see the Blues play the Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls in New Jersey on July 22, Paris St-Germain in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 25, Barcelona in Washington DC on July 28 before their final match back at Stamford Bridge versus Fiorentina on Aug 5.
