Schalke indefinitely suspend Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam• Sporting director Horst Heldt called for ‘consequences’ after Cologne defeat
• Boateng and Sam have no future at the club Schalke have indefinitely suspended the midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam with immediate effect. “There was no longer a relationship of trust, ” the club’s sporting director Horst Heldt said. The club’s initial statement said that the players had been released and it seems likely that neither player has a future at the club.
The midfielder Marco Höger has also been suspended from training and first-team action until the end of next week over what Heldt called “a problem of loyalty”. The move comes less than 24 hours after Schalke’s 2-0 loss in Cologne, which threatens the club’s hopes of gaining a place in next season’s Europa League.
“Horst Heldt announced there would be consequences after Sunday’s defeat away to Cologne and the first action has been taken: Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam have been suspended from the club with immediate effect,” read a Schalke statement. “Marco Höger is suspended from training and first-team action up to and including Saturday, 16th May.”
The Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler said the defeat to Cologne was a “truly awful performance”.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with us,” he added. “You will never win a Bundesliga game playing like that. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the worst games we’ve played in years. I’m glad that I didn’t have to watch that as a spectator.”
Boateng was sent home from Ghana’s team at last year’s World Cup in Brazil. With two matches remaining in the season, Schalke are two points ahead of the seventh-placed Borussia Dortmund.
Schalke began the season with hopes of qualifying for the Champions League but have struggled under their new coach Roberto Di Matteo.
