Garry Monk in talks with Swansea over new contract



Swansea City boss Garry Monk has revealed preliminary talks are under way over a new deal at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk has been in charge of the Premier League club since early 2014, and they are likely to finish his first full season in charge in the top eight, while still holding a chance of a place in the Europa League with two games remaining.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's home game with Manchester City, Monk said: "I've began those contract talks with the chairman and the club and I'm looking for the future to be with Swansea."I'm looking to progress this club for the next season.

"We have opened discussions - we have said we will sit down and go into detail in the near future.

"Whether that's in the next few days or weeks I am not sure because we're in a busy period at the moment.

"My agent will sit down with the club, but it's just about trying to get the right time to meet and discuss it.

"It's like any contract, an agreement has to be reached. But I am very focused on Swansea City, that's very clear and you all know that. I have no plans to change anything."

Swansea City 'protected' against bids for Garry Monk - Jenkins

Swansea's growing strength as a club offers them protection against potential approaches for manager Garry Monk, says chairman Huw Jenkins.
Monk expects to sign a new contract with the Swans "in the next few days".
West Ham, now without a manager, have been linked with Monk, who led Swansea to their highest Premier League finish of eighth place in his first full season in charge.
"We've gone to a new level and that's a good protection policy," said Jenkins.
"Perhaps we could be exposed by the biggest clubs in the Premier League and perhaps by the biggest clubs in Europe.
"But in general we are a strong, successful club ourselves and perhaps that's the biggest protection of all in [terms of] some of the clubs that may be interested in our manager or players."
Swansea finished their season with a 1-0 loss away at Crystal Palace, but it was still the Welsh club's most successful season in the Premier League.
In Monk's first full campaign since succeeding Michael Laudrup as manager, the Swans claimed a club-record points tally of 56.
And Jenkins added: "The good thing where we are as a football club is we've got a really good, really strong squad of players."
