There has been lots of paper talk that Newcastle are close to signing midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV, but Sky sources understand the Dutch side have had no contact from the Magpies.
Wijnaldum is due to return to pre-season training tomorrow, and missed today's 6-0 friendly win over Eindstand SV Dosko because he was given extra time off, along with other international players who were involved in the Euro qualifiers last month.

PSV have also had no expressions of interest from Roma, who have also been linked with the 24-year-old, but they have had one official bid from Zenit.

Wijnaldum is valued at £15million, has a gentleman's agreement that PSV will let him leave this summer, and his agent is working on getting him a move to England.

PSV EXPECTING NEWCASTLE OFFER

We have an update on the future of Newcastle target Georginio Wijnaldum.

Reports over the weekend suggested Toon boss Steve McClaren was in advanced talks with PSV Eindhoven over a move for the Holland international after he was left out of the club’s first pre-season friendly.

However, Wijnaldum only returned to training today and was never due to play in the friendly.

We understand PSV are expecting a bid from Newcastle for the player but there has been nothing concrete so far.

Newcastle United chief Lee Charnley makes visit to Holland to hold 'serious' talks

Newcastle United have held face-to-face talks with PSV Eindhoven after cranking up their bid to sign Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Chronicle understands that managing director Lee Charnley spent the day in Holland and held “serious” discussions in Schiphol near Amsterdam.

Sources in Holland say that a proposal was made to sign the Dutch star with a fee in the region of ?15m to ?20m mooted for the No 10.

It is thought that talks went well between PSV and United before Charnley returned back to the UK and brought the rest of the Magpies board up to speed.

Charnley is the man who will make the final decision on the deal.

Wijnaldum would be one of Newcastle’s top earners, and part of the talks with the player included where he would fit in given fellow Dutchman Siem De Jong plays in a similar position.

However, Wijnaldum has been assured that BOTH would feature as part of an attacking team at United this season.

Newcastle United face competition from Premier League rivals for the signing of PSV midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Magpies looked favourites to sign the Dutch international, having been engaged in weeks of talks with his current club, but managing director Lee Charnley has thus far failed to agree terms with the player or PSV,

SPORT: Newcastle United target Georginio Wijnaldum has left the players’ hotel in France, PSV Eindhoven have just tweeted.

They said: "PSV nearing an agreement with Newcastle United and Wijnaldum has permission to complete his personal negotiations and undergo inspection."

PSV Eindhoven have given attacking midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum permission to talk to Newcastle about a possible move and undergo a medical.

Sky sources report that the clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £14.5m for the Dutch international.

Wijnaldum has left his hotel in France and is en route to the north-east, and Newcastle are hoping to have him in the travelling party which is heading to the United States for a pre-season tour this weekend.

The 24-year-old Wijnaldum captained the PSV team which won the Dutch title last season and has been a long-term Newcastle target.

The former Feyenoord man has been capped 19 times by the Netherlands and was on target in their 3-0 defeat of Brazil in the third place play-off at the World Cup last summer.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren knows Wijnaldum well from his two stints in charge of Dutch side FC Twente.
