Manchester United transfers: Red Devils eyeing Argentina No.1 Sergio Romero - reports



Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The 28-year-old was released by Sampdoria at the end of last season, and is available on a free transfer.

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford next season, with current keepers David De Gea and Victor Valdes both rumoured to be on the move this summer.

De Gea continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid, despite jetting off to the USA to play a part in United's pre-season tour.

Valdes, on the other hand, was left behind by United, and has reported interest from Antalyaspor in Turkey and Valencia.

Louis van Gaal is scouting the market for replacements, and Sky Italia report he could be tempted by Romero, given his experience and the fact he will not cost a transfer fee.

Romero was one of the stars of the 2014 World Cup, and was Argentina's custodian in their run to the Copa America final this summer.

Van Gaal worked with Romero at AZ Alkmaar, and he would represent a more than adequate understudy for De Gea, should the Spaniard stay at Old Trafford.

He has also been linked with Real - who could reportedly wait until next summer to land De Gea on a free transfer.

Roma continues to look for a goalkeeper to compete with De Sanctis.
With Skorupski heading to Empoli on loan, Sergio Romero is at the top of the Giallorossi's wish list but they face competition from Manchester United.
The English club has in fact offered Argentina's national team goalie a higher salary, approximately ?2 million net of taxes per season.
After his contract with Sampdoria expired, Romero is looking for a new team- the Premier League could be in his future.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero set to sign for Manchester United - sources



Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Argentina international goalkeeper Sergio Romero, sources have told ESPN FC.

United have targeted a move for free agent Romero as they are ready to sell Victor Valdes after the Spaniard had a falling out with Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal revealed earlier this month Valdes was up for sale after he refused to play in an under-21s game last season to work on his fitness.

United have moved quickly to fill the void to be left by Valdes' expected departure by lining up Romero.

Romero is a free agent after leaving Sampdoria this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Romero has agreed a three-year deal with United and is set to fly out to America to link up with his new teammates this weekend on their preseason tour.

Romero has a wealth of experience with the player with the No.1 keeper for Argentina at last summer's World Cup finals and this year's Copa America.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero was expected to meet his new Manchester United team-mates in San Jose on Saturday night after flying from Buenos Aires.
Romero, who played in last year's World Cup when Argentina reached the final, has been lined up by Van Gaal as a replacement for Victor Valdes.
The 28-year-old keeper played for the Dutch coach at AZ Alkmaar when they won the Eredivisie title in 2009.
Romero had been due to fly in with international team-mate Angel di Maria but the winger is set to complete his move to Paris Saint Germain instead.
United will try to sign another goalkeeper if David de Gea gets his wish and joins Real Madrid this summer.

Meanwhile Holland defender Daley Blind has pledged to be United's player for all positions after appearing at centre-back on the US tour.
Blind, who played mostly at left-back or as a holding midfielder last season, is becoming United's 'Mr Versatile', with forward roles just about the only outfield positions he hasn't tried.
'I played a lot as a central defender at youth level and also for a few games at Ajax,' he said. 'The manager knows I am a player that can play in different positions. I will play where the manager needs me. He is playing me now in this position and I will try to do my best.
'Of course, every position needs something different but I think I know the different positions and try to adapt the best way and try to play my own game. I don't think the manager will put me up front!
'Working for this manager is about learning every day. We are trying to do that and as a new team. You can see the new players are involved very quickly so I am happy that we are acting like a team as well.'

UNITED COMPLETE SIGNING OF ROMERO

Manchester United is delighted to announce that goalkeeper Sergio Romero has signed a three-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.

Romero, 28, made his senior debut in the Argentine Premier Division with Racing Club in 2007. He went on to play for AZ Alkmaar and more recently Sampdoria.

Sergio has represented his country on many occasions and was an integral part of Argentina’s 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil, who were defeated in the final by Germany.

Sergio Romero said: “I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United.

To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me. Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”

Louis van Gaal said: “Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper. He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United. He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind!
