West Brom and Tottenham Hotspur are continuing advanced talks today over a possible deal for Federico Fazio.

Reports the clubs have agreed a £5 million fee for the Argentine defender, have been dismissed by sources at The Hawthorns.

It was thought Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wanted to use Fazio as a makeweight in a move for Albion ace Saido Berahino.

But it now appears the 28-year-old, who has fallen down the centre-back pecking order at White Hart Lane, could seal a switch independent of any conversations over Berahino.

Should the Fazio deal go through, it will cast further doubt over the Baggies future of Joleon Lescott.

The 33-year-old, who is into the final 12 months of a two-year contract at West Brom, was the subject of an optimistic £1 million bid from Midland rivals Aston Villa last month.

Lescott started the 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City but was dropped from the team that drew at Watford on Saturday.

It was the first time Lescott had not started in 21 Premier League games under Tony Pulis

Fazio was sent off twice in his first seven Spurs matches and went on to make 31 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season.

But the 6ft 5ins defender is not likely get as much match action this term.

Summer signings Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer as well as Belgian international Jan Vertonghen are all ahead of Fazio in the centre-back stakes.

West Brom are in discussions with Tottenham over the signing of centre-back Federico Fazio, according to Sky sources.

The 28-year-old Argentine joined Spurs last summer in an £8m deal from Sevilla and made 32 appearances in all competitions last season.

But manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed two new central defenders this summer - Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer - leaving Fazio as their fifth-choice, despite also offloading Vlad Chiriches to Napoli and Younes Kaboul to Sunderland.

It is understood Spurs are interested in signing West Brom's England Under-21 international striker Saido Berahino but the beginning of discussions have centered around a deal for Fazio.

Albion are keen to strengthen defensively after losing their Premier League opener 3-0 at home to Manchester City and subsequently drawing 0-0 with Watford in their second fixture.

They have so far signed defender James Chester from Hull while their current first-choice centre-back Joleon Lescott is reportedly the subject of interest to Aston Villa.

Fazio, who has made over 150 appearances since joining Sevilla seven years ago, was captain of the side that won the Europa League in 2014.

'FAZIO NOT PART OF SAIDO DEAL'

West Brom boss Tony Pulis says Saido Berahino will not be going to Tottenham just because Federico Fazio is heading to The Hawthorns.

Pulis confirmed at a press conference earlier today that Fazio is having a medical with the Baggies.

But he added: "That deal has absolutely nothing to do with Saido's position at the football club. We want Saido to stay. You never say never but we want him to stay and I think it would be in his best interests."

Fazio: West Brom deal to sign defender from Tottenham stalls

West Brom's bid to sign Federico Fazio from Tottenham has stalled.
The 28-year-old defender had a medical with the Baggies on Friday but no agreement has been reached over his personal terms.
There is a chance the deal could be resurrected as a loan move but manager Tony Pulis is looking at other options.
Meanwhile, Pulis says he might have to offer Spurs target Saido Berahino, 22, some protection from the ongoing transfer speculation.
The Baggies turned down a bid for Berahino from Tottenham on Tuesday.
"I told him not to get wrapped up in all the hype," said Pulis. "He's a young lad and he might need some protection."
