Liverpool set to open talks with Mamadou Sakho over new contract amid interest from Roma and Bayer Leverkusen - Liverpool want to tie Mamadou Sakho down to a new long-term contract
- The France international defender, 25, has been subject to interest this summer from Roma and Bayer Leverkusen
- Sakho signed for Liverpool from PSG two years ago for £18m
- His first-team opportunities at Anfield have become limited this season
- Sakho will seek assurances over his game-time if he is to stay on Merseyside because he wants to make France's squad for Euro 2016
Liverpool are ready to end uncertainty over Mamadou Sakho's future by opening talks over a new contract.The France international, who cost £18million when he was signed two years ago from Paris St Germain, has failed to make the squad for either of Liverpool's opening games of the new campaign.
Roma made an enquiry last week to take Sakho on loan for the season but that offer was flatly rejected by Liverpool; Bayer Leverkusen are also keen on the 25-year-old but Liverpool are adamant that he will not be moving during this window.Sakho is regarded within Anfield as being important for the future and Liverpool want to tie him down to a long-term deal, improving his current £75,000 per week wages to terms in the region of £100,000 per week.Sakho is anxious about getting regular football this year in order to preserve his place in France's squad for Euro 2016 and his concerns will have grown after Brendan Rodgers has chosen to go with Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren as his central defensive pairing.
Lovren was selected for the opening trip to Stoke after Sakho missed training before the first game as he was on paternity leave but he failed to make the 18-man squad for Monday night's 1-0 defeat of Bournemouth.
There is no indication yet as to whether Sakho will commit himself to a new deal, as this is the early stage of the process.
Liverpool's desire to keep Sakho, however, is obvious as they would be left without experienced cover if he was to leave.
They do have the Portugal Under-21 international Tiago Ilori pushing for a role;
Liverpool held discussions with his advisors earlier this summer about renegotiating his contract but he has yet to sign. He has been linked with Watford but wants to stay on Merseyside to prove himself.
