Salford City 1 Southport 0: FA Cup Match Report A world class goal from James Poole ensured Salford City made it to the FA Cup First Round for the first time in their history after a 1-0 win against National League side Southport. There was little action in the opening 10 minutes as both sides steadily found their feet, and it was Liam Nolan who tested Jay Lynch with a long range drive, but the Salford stopper was equal to it.
Lynch was called upon again a few minutes later when a free kick was headed goalwards by Luke Foster, but from there The Ammies started to seize control with Poole heading narrowly over.
The former Hartlepool forward had another excellent chance as he skilfully turned his defender before curling narrowly wide, while Lewis Hardcastle also went close on the stroke of half time.
Around the hour mark Salford really had Southport under the cosh, with the visitors struggling to contain the flair of Poole and Danny Webber, who combined to produce perhaps the goal of the season.
Webber picked up a pass from Hardcastle before laying it off to Poole, and with Max Crocombe off his line he lobbed the Sandgrounders’ keeper from a good 40 yards.
Will Beesley sent a low cross across the face of goal as Southport searched for an equaliser, but they couldn’t create anything real as Salford made it into Monday’s draw.
