Gus Poyet is set to return to management with AEK Athens. The Uruguayan is on the shortlist for the Aston Villa job after Tim Sherwood was sacked on Sunday following a dismal start to the season. However, Poyet is in advanced talks with the Greek Super League outfit about becoming their new manager. Poyet has been out of work since being sacked by Sunderland in March.
He was relieved of his duties after just one win in 12 Premier League matches, leaving the club just one point above the drop zone.
The ex-Chelsea and Spurs midfielder has been keen to return to management and is said to have received offers both in England and Europe.
He is reportedly due to arrive in Athens later today where he will hold talks with AEK directors to replace Traianos Dellas. The club are currently third in the Super League table after eight games. Poyet was under consideration by Villa as they face problems over first choice Remi Garde's proposed appointment.
Frenchman Garde pulled out of covering the Manchester derby at short notice on Sunday as a TV analyst for Canal Plus.
However, his coaching team of Bruno Genesio and Gerald Baticle are still working at Lyon and the French club are refusing Villa permission to speak to their coaches.
