Manchester United: Michael Carrick being assessed at Reds before injury update
United are set to issue a medical update on Michael Carrick's ankle injury when manager Louis van Gaal holds his pre-Watford press conference on Friday. The Reds are sweating on the injury the 34-year-old midfielder suffered playing for England against Spain in a friendly on Friday night.
United's vice captain was stretchered off in Alicante in the final minute of the 2-0 defeat and flew home from Spain with the squad on Saturday.
He is expected to have a scan at United's Carrington training and medical centre this week where the extent of the problem to his right ankle will be assessed.
Initial predictions were for a potential six-week lay-off but United's medics will deliver the bulletin to Van Gaal this week once scans have been looked at closely. After the match on Friday England boss Hodgson said: “Michael has got a severely twisted ankle which normally means ligament damage.
“We won't know that of course until he's had an X-ray or a scan, but it doesn't look good.”
Last year Carrick suffered ligament damage to his left ankle in his first training summer session at United on Louis van Gaal's first day as the Reds boss.
The club confirmed he would be out for 10-12 weeks after the July incident. Carrick finally made it back into the first team for his first match under Van Gaal on November 8 in a 1-0 Old Trafford win over Crystal Palace.
In March he signed a one-year United contract extension which expires next June.
