Ron Vlaar agrees AZ move following Aston Villa exit AZ Alkmaar have announced an agreement to sign former Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar on a free transfer. Netherlands international Vlaar, 30, left Villa in the summer after turning down a new contract but he has been without a club since after having to undergo a knee operation in July. The defender, who was part of the Netherlands side that finished third at the 2014 World Cup,
has been training with AZ and the Eredivisie side announced on Monday that they had reached a verbal agreement for a contract until the end of the season.
The deal is subject to a medical. "We are delighted with the capture of Ron Vlaar," AZ director of football Max Huiberts said. "He gives our squad a huge boost in quality.
"I don't need to explain his strengths, which everyone has been able to see over the last few seasons. Last year he was a driving force behind the Oranje's success at the World Cup. Mentally Ron brings a lot. His presence can boost both the team's performance and the development of other players."
Vlaar, who was also linked with Everton, came through the youth ranks at AZ and made his Eredivisie debut with the club before leaving for Feyenoord in 2006.
