Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren is confident that Cheick Tiote’s move to Shanghai Shenhua will go through in the next few days. The Ivory Coast international has been in Spain for talks with the Blue Devils, but is now back on Tyneside and waiting for the deal to be finalised.
The Chinese Premier League club are currently in Marbella for pre-season training and Tiote is likely to leave Newcastle over the weekend.McClaren said: “Negotiations are still ongoing. There was a complication that they were in camp in Spain so they have not got back together.
“But I can’t see any (more) complications.”
Tiote has been angling for a move this month and United have also had interest from Galatasaray in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, McClaren has a defensive crisis ahead of the clash with Watford.
Paul Dummett has been ruled out and Jack Colback, who played left-back against West Ham, is also struggling.
McClaren said: “Kevin Mbabu is out, Dummett has a tight hamstring, Colback who deputised at left back has a little niggle which we will not take a risk on, so we have four fit defenders.
“Steven Taylor will be in the squad and probably on the bench. In terms of balance it is very difficult, but we will find a solution somewhere and players will have to step in and do a job.
