Defender has been told he is no longer required at Melwood as he begins his search for a new club
Jose Enrique's five-year stay at Liverpool is over. The Spaniard has been granted permission to find himself a new club, and will not return to Melwood again having been informed his services were no longer required at the training ground. Enrique's Anfield contract, worth around £65,000 a week, is officially due to expire next month, but with the 30-year-old nowhere near the first-team picture under Jurgen Klopp it has been agreed that the left back is free to plan his next move.
It is believed he has already said his goodbyes at Melwood. Enrique has managed just three senior appearances for the Reds this season – although he captained the club in the FA Cup third round replay with Exeter City. His last outing came as a substitute against West Ham on January 30, and he has not featured in a matchday squad since February 9.
In total, he played 99 times for Liverpool, scoring twice. He was a member of Kenny Dalglish's League Cup winning side in 2012, playing in the final win over Cardiff City at Wembley.
He was a regular throughout his first two seasons on Merseyside, but fell down the pecking order after a long-term knee injury sustained during the 2013/14 campaign.
He was informed by former boss Brendan Rodgers that he had no future with the club, but rejected chances to join both West Brom and Newcastle earlier this season, stating his desire to stay and fight for his place.
But with Alberto Moreno, Brad Smith and the fit-again Jon Flanagan all ahead of him in the pecking order, there was no likelihood of him reviving his Reds career.
