Reds to begin preliminary discussions with Germany midfielder over new, improved deal
Liverpool are ready to open talks with Emre Can over a new contract. The Reds are preparing to begin preliminary discussions with the Germany international and his representatives over an improved long-term deal. Can's current Anfield contract, signed in 2014, still has two years left to run but the club are eager to secure the 22-year-old's future – and to recognise his importance to the team under Jurgen Klopp. The former Bayer Leverkusen man emerged as a key figure last season, making 49 appearances having been restored to his preferred central midfield role.
Liverpool are keen to strengthen that area in the summer, with Borussia Moenchengladbach's Mahmoud Dahoud a target, but Can is seen as an integral part of their plans going forward.
Discussions are still at an early stage, but Can has spoken glowingly about both Klopp and Liverpool this season and is likely to welcome the chance to extend his stay on Merseyside. One midfielder who could be on his way out of Anfield, though, is Joe Allen, with Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins confirming the Welsh club's interest in signing Reds midfielder this summer.
Allen is entering the final year of his contract, and is keen to play more regular football. The 26-year-old has stated that his future will be discussed this summer, but is currently away with Wales at Euro 2016.
Jenkins said: “Naturally, we are interested in good players like Joe who may be available this summer given that he has a year left on his contract.
“Obviously we will keep tabs on his situation and see what happens later in the summer.”
