Chile beat Colombia 2-0 in weather-delayed Copa America semifinal



Early goals from Charles Aranguiz and Jose Fuenzalida helped Chile to a 2-0 win against Colombia in a weather-delayed Copa America semifinal in Chicago.

Chile wasted no time picking up right where they left off from Saturday's 7-0 quarterfinal drubbing of Mexico. Aranguiz was in the right place at the right time to tap home a poor Juan Cuadrado clearance in the seventh minute to give La Roja an early 1-0 lead.

Colombia barely had time to regroup before they were picking the ball out of the back of David Ospina's net once again.

A Claudio Bravo goal kick found Alexis Sanchez on the left flank, and the Arsenal man cut back inside and smashed a shot off the post. Ospina could only look on as a charging Fuenzalida beat the Colombia defence to the rebound to tap home for a 2-0 lead.

Colombia hung in for the remainder of the first half with James Rodriguez coming close twice and Santiago Arias nearly volleying over Bravo to get Los Cafeteros on the scoreboard.

Colombia had a 9-3 edge in chances created in the first half, but it led to just two shots on goal and the teams went to the dressing rooms with the score 2-0 in favour of Chile.

As the teams went to the locker room, the skies in Chicago opened up and rain and lightning forced organisers to tell fans to seek cover and delay the match for over two hours.

When play resumed on the soggy field, Colombia's hopes of a second-half rally were dented as Carlos Sanchez was issued his second yellow card of the match and sent off leaving Colombia to finish with 10 men.

Colombia were still bright despite being down a man and James Rodriguez nearly cut Chile's lead in half with a swerving shot from distance in the 70th minute, but Bravo dealt with it admirably to keep his team's lead at two goals.

Defending champions Chile will play Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday June 26 in a rematch of the 2015 Copa America final in Santiago.
