Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly has announced his retirement from the national team after 18 years and a record 107 matches.

The former Crystal Palace, Burnley and Fulham stopper was known for playing in grey sweatpants and led Hungary to the round of 16 at Euro 2016.

He became the oldest-ever player to appear at a European Championships at 40 years old, two months and two weeks, overtaking the previous record held by Germany's Lothar Matthaus.

Kiraly released a statement on his official website saying that he will continue playing with hometown team Szombathelyi Haladas, but that playing for his country was now beyond him physically.

"I have 40 years and I can no longer perform at the level that the selection deserves, so I decided to stop," the goalkeeper said.


"I'm a perfectionist and I always gave the maximum. I'm satisfied because I gave all my energy. I came to my limit.

"Bernd Storck gave me the right to decide the way forward after the European Championship. I decided there would not be a more dignified farewell than the European Championships, which triggered a real football fever, a lot of joy caused by the Hungarian people, and once again returned Hungarian football onto Europe's 'big stage'."

基華利周二在個人官方網站發出聲明：「我已經40歲，不能再維持國家隊所要求的演出水平，所以選擇結束。我是一個完美主義者，一向都全力以赴。我感到很滿意，因為我已為球隊付出所有精力，已達到極限。」不過，基華利尚未徹底「掛褲」，目前只是退出國家隊，仍會為家鄉球隊Szombathelyi Haladas效力。
