Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic completes loan move to HullStay at Sporting cancelled as Serbian signs up for relegation battle
Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has joined Hull City on loan for the rest of the season.
The ECHO revealed on Sunday that the Reds were in discussions with the Premier League strugglers over a temporary deal for the Serbia international.
Talks were finalised today with Markovic returning to England after his season-long loan at Sporting Lisbon was cancelled by mutual agreement.
Despite a lack of wide attackers in the absence of Sadio Mane, Jurgen Klopp wasn’t interested in bolstering his squad with the 22-year-old and gave the green light for him to head for Hull.
Tigers boss Marco Silva believes Markovic can help them launch a push for Premier League survival after a miserable spell in Portugal.
Sporting were desperate to off-load Markovic and Liverpool agreed once it became clear that another deal for him was in place.
Markovic cost the Reds £20million when he signed from Benfica in the summer of 2014 but he has never come close to living up to that price tag.
He scored three goals in 34 appearances for Liverpool in the 2014/15 campaign before spending last season on loan at Fenerbahce where he was hampered by a hamstring injury.
Markovic returned to Liverpool for pre-season but failed to impress Klopp and there is no way back for him at Anfield.
He headed to Sporting in a bid to kick-start his flagging career under the guidance of Jorge Jesus, who previously managed him at Benfica. But he started just two league games for Sporting and hadn’t featured since their European clash with Legia Warsaw on December 7.
