Liverpool have opened talks with Philippe Coutinho over a new long-term contract.

The Reds are keen to reward the Brazilian attacker for the outstanding form he has produced so far this term.

Coutinho, whose current contract runs until 2020, has blossomed into arguably the club's biggest asset and the lucrative deal will reflect both his importance and influence.

The gifted 24-year-old, who has scored six goals for Jurgen Klopp's side so far this season, has been heavily linked with Barcelona, but Liverpool are determined to do everything they can to retain his services.

Negotiations are ongoing but the Reds have no intention of inserting a buyout clause.

“Liverpool feels like my home,” Coutinho told the ECHO earlier this season.

“I feel happy, settled and comfortable here with the city and the people.”

Coutinho, who recently returned to action after seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage, has proved a massive hit at Anfield since his £8.5million move from Inter Milan in January 2013. He has gone on to score 34 goals in 163 appearances.

Liverpool are hopeful that Philippe Coutinho will commit his future to the club by putting pen to paper on a lucrative new five-year contract.

Talks between Reds sporting director Michael Edwards and the Brazilian attacker's representatives are progressing well.

There will be no release clause in the deal with Liverpool adamant that won't form part of the negotiations.

Coutinho, who looks set to be passed fit for Wednesday night's EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Southampton, has indicated that he's happy and settled at Liverpool.

Anfield officials have a good relationship with his agent Kia Joorabchian, who also looks after team-mate Lucas Leiva.

If everything goes to plan he will sign a contract over the coming weeks to keep him at Anfield until 2022.

Coutinho appeared to be a doubt for the visit of Saints after missing training at Melwood on Monday as the Reds continue to manage his return to action following seven weeks out with ankle ligament damage.

However, the 24-year-old played a full part in Tuesday's session with Jurgen Klopp's squad and as long as he comes through Wednesday morning's final preparations without discomfort he should line up against Claude Puel's side.

The Reds announced on Wednesday morning the Brazil forward had penned a fresh contract, the terms of which will come into effect from July 1, 2017.

It’s news that will delight fans the world over given how Coutinho has blossomed into a top-class performer during his four years at Anfield so far.

And the man himself is eager to highlight the influence they have had on his decision to commit his future to Liverpool.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “Ever since my arrival here, I was welcomed with open arms by the supporters - and everyone at this football club.

“This is an important factor that carries weight when you decide to remain here for a longer period - and this did have a lot of weight when I thought about the renewal of my contract.

“I can only thank every supporter for their faith in me. I really hope to repay them. I will do my very best on the pitch to create assists for my teammates and score goals for us to try and win trophies and titles.

“It’s not just me - since me and my family arrived here we have been welcomed with open arms by everyone. We feel at home in this city, we feel a part of this city. It is a very important day for me, my wife and my daughter. I am happy - and everyone is happy at home!”

Another key factor in Coutinho’s decision to prolong his Liverpool career is the opportunity to work under Jürgen Klopp, he revealed.

“Jürgen is a great manager,” the 24-year-old stated. “We all can see how much he has changed here since he arrived - and how much he will change in future. He is a winner.

Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool forward signs new five-year contract

Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho has signed a new five-year contract worth about £150,000 a week, making him the highest-paid player at the club.

The 24-year-old Brazil international joined the Reds from Inter Milan for £8.5m in January 2013, and his new deal will take him through to 2022.

Coutinho has scored 34 goals in 163 appearances for Liverpool.

"It is a club that I am very grateful to and this shows my happiness here," he told the club's website.

There is no release clause in Coutinho's new contract, the terms of which come into effect from 1 July.

Coutinho, who has been linked with a move to Spanish champions Barcelona, added: "I signed this new contract to stay here for a few more years because it's a great honour for me.

"It gives me great happiness because I was welcomed here with open arms by everyone at the club and the supporters right from my first day."

Coutinho was brought to Anfield by former manager Brendan Rodgers, with Southampton also interested in signing him at the time.

He has established himself as one of the Reds' key players during his four years at Anfield.

Coutinho has recently returned from an ankle injury, prior to which he had scored six goals in 14 appearances this season.
