Barcelona: Gerard Deulofeu could return to Nou Camp from Everton



Barcelona are considering activating a clause to re-sign Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu this summer.

The Spanish champions have the option to buy the 23-year-old, who is currently on loan at AC Milan, for £10.2m (12m euros).

He left Barca for the Toffees for £4.3m in 2015 but has only started four Premier League games this season under Ronald Koeman.

Deulofeu has impressed during his Milan loan spell, scoring twice in 13 games.

His form at the San Siro earned him a second Spain cap, scoring in a 2-0 win over France last month.

Barca sporting director Robert Fernandez confirmed to Catalan station TV3 on Sunday: "The club are firmly considering the option to bring him back to play for the first team next season."

Barcelona are to trigger their buy-back clause for Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu, with the youngster returning to the Nou Camp for £10.5 million.

Deulofeu spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, having failed to convince manager Ronald Koeman he should be part of his long-term plans.

But now the new Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde will offer the 23-year-old a fresh start at the club where he started his career.

Deulofeu is a graduate of the famed La Masia academy in Barca, first moving to Everton on loan under the management of Roberto Martinez in 2013 before making the deal permanent two years ago.

Despite his immense talent he has struggled for consistency in English football but was long considered a star of the future in Spain.

Barca’s initial reluctance to allow him to leave was reflected in the buy-back clause that was part of the Goodison deal. Now that is to be activated.

Everton, meanwhile, continue to bring in further reinforcements. Having signed Jordan Pickford and Ajax’s Davy Klaassen for a combined £54 million, it now seems only a matter of time before Spanish striker Sandro Ramirez is confirmed as the third significant purchase in a matter of days.

Everton have been in talks with the Spanish Under-21 striker, who will join from Malaga in a £5.2 million deal.

As in the case of Pickford, Everton have arranged a medical for Ramirez while he is on duty at the European Under-21 championships.

Ramirez featured for his country as they kicked off their competition with a 5-0 thrashing of Macedonia.

It remains to be seen if these signings will be offset by high-profile exits. Everton have long maintained they do not need to sell their prized assets in order to fund Koeman’s rebuilding.

However, they also know bids for Romelu Lukaku are inevitable, while there has been a shadow over Ross Barkley’s future for months.

Gerard Deulofeu will officially return to Barcelona. The Catalan club posted a note on their official website communicating that the striker will return after his loan at Milan last season.

"FC Barcelona have activated the buy-back clause for Gerard Deulofeu. In the following days, the terms will be agreed with both Everton and the player. Deulofeu’s contract will run until 30 June 2019."

A return in the Blaugrana colors could be temporary because Barcelona will decide his future next week. There will be a meeting between the agent, the player and the club to discuss the situation. The player wants to play as much as possible to have a shot to be called up for the World Cup in Russia in the summer of 2018.

Barcelona will re-sign winger Gerard Deulofeu from Everton after exercising a buy-back clause believed to be worth 12m euros (£10.6m).

Deulofeu originally went on loan to Everton in the 2013-14 season and returned in a £4.3m deal in 2015.

The 23-year-old made 13 appearances for Everton last season before joining AC Milan on loan in January.

Barcelona say they expect "terms will be agreed" on a two-year contract "in the following days".

After a good first season on Merseyside, Deulofeu fell out of favour and spent the final half of last season in Italy with AC Milan.

He started 36 games for Everton, with a further 39 from the bench, scoring eight goals. His contract had been due to run until June 2018.

The Barcelona statement read: "FC Barcelona have activated the buy-back clause for Gerard Deulofeu.

"In the following days, the terms will be agreed with both Everton and the player. Deulofeu's contract will run until 30 June 2019."

Deulofeu is in Poland, where his Spain team will face Germany in the final of the European Under-21 Championship on Friday.

In April, Barca sporting director Robert Fernandez had revealed that they were considering re-signing the wideman, who has won three senior Spain caps.

Barcelona made their announcement hours before Everton signed Nigeria striker Henry Onyekuru for £7m - and sent him on loan to Anderlecht.

Deulofeu's departure from Everton is no surprise as he was clearly not part of manager Ronald Koeman's plans. The only thing that might seem surprising is that he returns to Barcelona.

He had been sent out on loan by Barcelona to Everton and Sevilla with mixed results before he made a permanent move to Goodison Park in June 2015.

Deulofeu was regarded as talented and wildly inconsistent, a status he has done little to alter in recent times, even during a loan spell at AC Milan last season.

Barcelona, however, clearly believe the raw materials are there - which they undoubtedly are - and new coach Ernesto Valverde can fashion the finished product.

Deulofeu faces a challenge to obtain regular game time alongside Barcelona's attacking riches such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar and this is now the crucial phase of his career.

He is a player who can excite and exasperate in equal measure. Deulofeu must now alter that balance in his and Barcelona's favour.
