Everton agree £25m deal for Ben Godfrey with Norwich City

Everton have agreed a fee of £25m plus add-ons for Norwich City central defender Ben Godfrey.

The fee is a record received by the Canaries, eclipsing the previous mark of £20m - plus £4m in add-ons - from Leicester for James Maddison in 2018.

Everton had an offer of about £20m, with £6m in add-ons, rejected before increasing their bid.

Godfrey, 22, is set to have a medical in the next 24 hours and personal terms are not expected to be a problem.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to increase his options in defence following injuries to Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Godfrey joined Norwich in 2016 from York City for £150,000 and played a key part in their promotion to the Premier League in 2018-19.

He made 30 top-flight appearances last season as the Canaries were relegated back to the Championship.

York City are in line to receive about £2.5m as part of the switch, having negotiated a sell-on clause as part of his move to Carrow Road.

Godfrey is set to become Everton's fifth signing of the summer after midfielders Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, playmaker James Rodriguez and young left-back Niels Nkounkou.

Norwich were braced for bids for Godfrey during the summer and added defender Ben Gibson from Burnley on a season-long loan deal to provide cover.

Godfrey's expected departure leaves Gibson, Grant Hanley, Christoph Zimmerman and Timm Klose as the Carrow Road side's centre-back options.

Ben Godfrey has signed for Everton from Norwich City for an undisclosed fee, penning a five-year deal until the end of June 2025.

The 22-year-old central defender, broadly regarded as one of England’s brightest prospects, captained England Under-21s on his full debut in September 2019 and was an integral part of Norwich’s Championship title-winning campaign in 2018/19.

Godfrey, who has also played in central midfield and at full-back during his fledgling career, graduated through the youth system at hometown club York City before signing for Norwich on his 18th birthday.

He is Everton’s fifth signing of this transfer window following the arrivals of Niels Nkounkou, Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Everton have signed defender Ben Godfrey from Norwich City in a deal worth an initial £25m, potentially rising to £30m.

Godfrey, 22, joins the Toffees on a five-year contract.

He is Everton's fifth signing of the summer after midfielders Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, playmaker James Rodriguez and left-back Niels Nkounkou.
