Generation game
By Andrew McKenzie

The names Sheringham, Bruce, Webb, Schmeichel and Ferdinand are well known in footballing circles.

But few may know that those famous old names could soon be enjoying a second spell in the limelight.

BBC Sport looks at five familiar names with not so familiar faces all eager to follow in the footsteps of their fathers.

CHARLIE SHERINGHAM
Position: Striker
Born: 17/4/88
Club: Ipswich

Father: Teddy Sheringham. Former England striker who is now coming to the end of his career with West Ham after successful spells with Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Spurs (twice) and Manchester United. Won 51 caps for his country.

Charlie Sheringham had spells with his father's former clubs Millwall and Tottenham but was released by Spurs.

After training with Bournemouth he went to Ipswich and impressed enough to be offered a one-year deal at Portman Road.

He was part of Ipswich's FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2005.

A similar player to his father in that he is a fine passer of the ball and possesses a good footballing brain.

AARON FERDINAND
Position: Striker
Born: 15/3/87

Father: Les Ferdinand. England striker who won 17 caps after being a late starter at QPR. He earned a £6m move to Newcastle and then joined Spurs before ending his career with spells at West Ham, Leicester, Bolton and Reading.

Aaron Ferdinand has been playing non-league football in the Allied Counties Premier Division against the likes of his father's old club Hayes.

But he has attracted the interest of Reading, who he trained with towards the end of the season. He will be returning for pre-season so the club can have a proper look at him.

The teenager also spent some time with Watford at the start of last season.

Much like his father he is a quick and powerful striker who is strong in the air.

LUKE WEBB
Position: Midfielder
Born: 12/9/86
Club: Coventry

Father: Neil Webb. Began his career with Reading before moving on to Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and then back to Forest. Played 26 times for England before injury took its toll.

Luke Webb is a talented and creative midfielder who was on the books at Arsenal and appeared for their reserves as well as Under-17 and Under-19 sides.

Has had back problems and also found opportunities hard to come by at Highbury.

After leaving Arsenal he had a trial with Wycombe but got injured playing for the reserves.

Has now signed for Coventry and Micky Adams said he could be a first-team player next season.

His younger brother Josh is currently with Reading

ALEX BRUCE
Position: Defence
Born: 28/09/1984
Club: Birmingham

Father: Steve Bruce. Began career with Gillingham and then Norwich. Made his name at the heart of the Manchester United defence before ending his career with Birmingham and Sheffield United. Now manager of Birmingham.

Dad Steve signed him for Birmingham from Blackburn on a two-year deal in January 2005.

He joined Wednesday on loan in March, providing defensive cover at full-back.

Played in all three of Wednesday's play-off games, as the Owls secured promotion to the Championship.

A solid and composed defender who handled the pressure of the play-off final and has his father looks.

Also had a loan spell at Oldham last season, scoring the winning spot-kick in the LDV Vans semi-final shoot-out and helping them knock out Manchester City in the FA Cup.

KASPER SCHMEICHEL
Position: Keeper
Born: 5/11/86
Club: Manchester City

Father: Peter Schmeichel. One of the greatest goalkeepers of all-time. Helped Denmark to victory at the 1992 European Championships and was the cornerstone for Manchester United's dominance of English football in the 1990s. Ended his career with spells at Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Kasper Schmeichel arrived at Manchester City in 2002 when his father was at the club and signed professional terms after turning 18 in November 2004.

He is Denmark's Under-19 goalkeeper and has drawn comparisons with his father from their coach Per Anderson.

Kasper was highly rated by City's former boss Kevin Keegan and appeared on the bench for their first team, but is yet to make his senior debut.
